Arthur Edmonds George Fredrick Dickson Story
edmondsallan - hi everyone . We are telling this true story on the life of Arthur Edmonds . Go slow reader - follow it closely .
Born in Kaikohe in 1854 was a male child who was named " George Fredrick Dickeson " He eventually became one of the original Founders of Kaikohe. His personal records on what he did for Kaikohe are in the Kaikohe history archives . At the age of ( 28 ) 1882 - he married the eldest daughter of Louis Clifford Goffe & Sarah Gammon Goffe ( nee Edmonds *** . ARTHURS !!! younger SISTER !!! ( keep an eye on the all important dates ) This young " Dickeson " was already making good business deals in Kaikohe when he married their daughter . As A wedding present Mr & Mrs Louis Clifford Goffe gave the couple a large store built, for them in Kaikohe . Because his father in law was in and selling several lines including groceries etc at Paihia , he also stocked the shop for him . In 1883 " Dickeson " was a dealer in wool ,an Auctioneer , kauri gum , farm implements as well as a general store. In the old premises he had rented in his teens to do business with he became so busy he had to start employing staff. At the age of ( 19 ) - 1873 - in his rented store , a person walked into his store ,applying for the job , which in the window had a large card, saying ' " Staff wanted ". That person who applied for the position was " Arthur Edmonds " At this stage , neither knew each other , and " Arthur who had been living pretty rough , did not even know his young sister had married his new boss. In fact " Mr George Fredrick Dickson & his wife Eleanor ( nee Goffe ) decided that in case he was not up to the job or the skills they needed, and needed to be dismissed it could save a lot of embarrasment, & did not tell him till a later date . From 1873 the business did a huge leap forward , with more immigrants settling in Kaikohe In fact it became necessary to split the Business . General store ( mainly on the food side ) and the buy/ sell for cash part, which with the settlement of farms etc was bursting away . In late 1874 . ' George Fredrick Dickeson who wanted to build a new , more palatial home , offered " Arthur Edmonds " a partner- ship , for a certain agreed sum of monies ( I could not find out how much - ) a partnership or sell the " General Store " completely to him . " Arthur " was embarrassed that all he had was monthly wages & with his large family , their was nothing saved . But his pride ( another Edmonds characteristic )wouldn't let him say so. Now " Eleanor "Wanted her new home & she knew her husbands finances could not do both or carry it financially. Not to be stopped in achieving her desire , she went away for 5 days , there & back to Auckland by stage coach , where she met " Samuel John Edmonds " her eldest brother , who by this time since 1846 , had became a very wealthy man . Eleanor charmed him into making " Arthur " a loan ,. This time I did find the signed note of acceptance - a bit ragged but readable " Samuel " went back to Kaikohe on the stage with " Eleanor " stayed a few days at her place and rubbed shoulders with " Arthur " at his rented home & family . " Arthur " took the opportunity to ask Samuel, his elder brother, if he could lend him a sum of monies . Samuel pretended he didn't know anything about what his brother in law , " Dickeson " had offered Arthur . They discussed it for along time , and next day " Arthur " took Samuel to have a look at the store which he would offer Samuel as collateral. " Samuel " lent his brother " Arthur " 400 pounds - 200 pounds - interest free to be repayed in 5 years & 200 pounds to be repaid in 10 years at one ( 1 )percent. One of " Eleanor's " grand children , although over 60 in age was able to tell me . Her Grandma use to tell the story over & over with a big smile on her face . Near the end of 1874 The General store in Kaikohe , had a change of name up high . It Read " Edmonds General Store " Photo's were taken . So far I have been unable to find them who ever has got them , they may have even been lost . The rest on " Arthur and his life " till he passed on is in the Edmonds reunion book or in my Journals . Their is a bit more on Arthur's Youth , I think it is best left not said . as it could be judged the wrong way and none of us are perfect . . Well I hope , dear readers you found this true story as fascinating as I did . I am so pleased that from a story puzzle of over eleven ( 11 )different pieces , in different parts of Northland , I was able to bring it together . We still have the other " wild Edmonds Group " stories yet to tell . OK - Till we meet again - regards - edmondsallan
