Evening Post, 10 Nov 1891 One of Wellington's most prominent tradesmen passed away last night - Mr John Lewin Bacon, cordial and aerated water manufacturer, of Tory-street, who fell a victim to typhoid fever, after three weeks illness. Mr bacon was born in Wardour-street, London and at the age of 18 he emigrated to America. There he remained for two years, but on the discovery of the Australian diggings he became attacked by the gold fever and made his way to Victoria in 1852. For eight years he was engaged in mining and various business speculations at Bendigo, Fiery Creek, Ararat, one other goldfields and a fair share of the good fortune that was flying about in those early days fell to his share. About 1860 Mr bacon returned to England, where he married and settled down to farming in Hertfordshire. It was in 1874 that he came to this colony and landing in Wellington, started in the business which he carried on till the time of his death. His intention when he left England was to again enter upon country life, but having an aerated water plant under his charge to be sold on commission, he decided to buy it on his own account and with it set up his factory. Mr Bacon always showed keen interest in public affairs, though never in municipal office and at political and other meetings he was always to be found. He was a useful member of the Commission of the Peace and has for several years been one of the most energetic workers on the Mount Cook School Committee. The Working Men's Club, of which he was treasurer, loses a strong supporter by his death. In Freemasonry he was connected with both the Waterloo and St Andrew's Lodges. Deceased was twice married and is survived by a widow and ten sons and daughters, mostly grown up, but two of them by his second marriage. In business, as well as public matters, he will be greatly missed.

BAIRD Emily 21 Aug 1881 aged 37
NZ Times, 20 Aug 1881 A very sudden death occurred in Cuba-street at about 6 o'clock last evening, to a married woman named Baird, the wife of Mr David Baird, engineer of the steamer Oreti. The family reside in Thompson-street, off Cuba-street and at the time mentioned the deceased, while passing Clement's blind factory, in Cuba-street, was taken suddenly ill and being carried into the house, Dr Tripe was called in, who at once ordered her removal to her home. Before this could be done, she became worse and died within two hours from the time of the first attack. The cause is attributed by Dr Tripe to a fit of apoplexy, no inquest will be necessary. The deceased leaves five children, the youngest a baby in arms. The husband, who is, as before mentioned, on board the Oetu, is at present away from Wellington and in view of the apparent helpless position of the children, a hope is expressed that the neighbours will lend their assistance in looking after the children's welfare until their father's return. We are requested to acknowledge the kindness and attention shown by Mesdames Clements and Bird to the deceased during her brief illness and also to Sergeant Burtenshaw for his promptness in calling in the services of the medical man.

BAIRD William 29 July 1886 aged 74
Evening Post, 28 July 1886 We notice with regret the death, at the age of 74, of Mr William Baird, which occurred at his residence on the Terrace yesterday. Mr Baird was a native of haddington and at an early age entered the plice force at Montogomeryshire. When Sir Robert Peel's new police force was established, Mr Baird was appointed Superintendent of the County Police and he subsequently succeeded to the important office of Chief Constable of the County, which office he filled with great credit, until about 22 years ago he determined to join his son, mr J. D. Baird, C.E., who had emigrated to Wellington some year before. Mr Baird accompanied by his wife, daughter and mr Martin Baird, then a boy, accordingly came to this city and he found employment first under the firm of Kennard Brothers, the eminent English contractors and subsequently as bookkeeper to the late Mr Peter Laing, which latter position he held for many years. Some time ago he met with an accident by a fall and he never thoroughly recovered from the effects. His health was evidently failing fast for some months past, but although conscious that his end was approaching, he was quite cheerful and contented. Death came very suddenly at last. Half an hour before he died, he was up and washed his hands. On returning to bed he complained of his hands being cold and his his wife (who is four years his senior) chafed them. He appeared to doze off and so passed to his eternal rest without the slightest struggle. He leaves a widow, one daughter and two sons. Mrs martin, wife of the Hon. John martin, M.L.C., is a sister of the deceased gentleman. Mr Baird was universally esteemed and generally popular amongst his large circle of acquaintances.

. daughter of Octavius William Henry Baldwin (1856-1928) & Eliza Meyrick (1852-1894) who married 14 Aug 1879 in Wellington. Elizabeth's mother Eliza and her 3 year old brother, Henry Thomas Baldwin (1891-1894) were drowned in the wreck of the 'ss Wairarapa' when she went down on the Great Barrier Island 20 Oct 1894. The Wairarapa left Sydney 24 Oct 1894 and was expected in Auckland by the 28th. As Wairarapa rounded the top of the North Island on the 28th, fog and storms set in. However, Captain John S. McIntosh refused to slow the ship from 13 knots and continued nearly full speed despite the thick fog. Fatally, the ship went off-course. Great anxiety ensued as, when overdue, there was no way of knowing where she may have come to grief as the only contact with the island at the time was via weekly trips from a steamer, it was three full days until news of the shipwreck reached Auckland. The hours after the wreck saw great loss of life. Many passengers could not swim and drowned in the rough seas trying to make it to shore. One life raft was seen floating out to sea and was never sighted again. Many men, including a large portion of the crew, took to one of the lifeboats, leaving women and children behind. A number of people took refuge in the ship’s rigging. At about 3am Captain McIntosh jumped into the sea and was presumed drowned. Several other lifeboats which had been safely launched stayed near the stricken ship and picked survivors from the sea where possible. The death toll of around 130 people remains one of the largest such losses in the country's history.

BARRETT, Elizabeth 13 Dec 1881 aged 82
. On Monday morning Elizabeth was found in her home in Taranaki-street by Alfred Johnson, relieving officer of the Benevolent Institution, in a wretched state of destitution. When Dr France arrived and a young girl, Elizabeth Stead, who had been taking food to the old lady three times a day, arrived, Elizabeth was lying in a front room on a bed covered with dirty linen, vermin crawling over her and covered in lice. She was unable to express her wants. Dr France said the toes on each was suffering from gangrene but it was impossible to make an examination as she was in such a dirty condition. Alfred Johnson went in search of her son, John Barrett, who had sole charge of her and had lived with her since the death of her husband. He was found in Market street and it was urged upon him the necessity of removing her to the Hospital. John questioned Alfred's right to interfere and that a doctor had attended her 6 weeks prior. After pressure he at length agreed to have her taken to Hospital. He refused she be taken in an express van and said he would get a cab. Finally, at 3p.m. Elizabeth was taken to the Hospital. She died there at 11.15p.m. The Coroner said the mode of transport to get her there had accelerated her death.

* The remains of the Late James Butler, a fortnight since was in our midst in health and spirits, were carried to their last resting place in the Church of England cemetery; the burial service being read by the Rev Mr Ewald. Mr Beale came to Wellington on the removal of the seat of Government and has for some time been a clerk in the Native Office. He has always been popular amongst our community, being at all times ready and willing to assist in entertainments for charitable objects, hi eminent talent as a violin player making him a most valuable acquisition. All the members of the Executive in Wellington, the Under Secretaries, the entire Civil Service and many of the most influential of the citizens, followed him to the grave. The circumstances of Mr Beale's funeral were especially melancholy, from the fact of his father, who had been telegraphed for, not having arrived to take part in it and that during his short, but fatal illness, he had no opportunity of taking a last farewell of any of the members of his family. It will, however, afford them some satisfaction to know that nothing had been omitted by his friends to alleviate his sufferings, ot to soothe his dying moments. His memory will be long cherished by his numerous friends in Wellington.

BENNETT, George 5 June 1891 aged 69
NZ Times, 6 June 1891 BENNETT - On the 5th June, at his residence, Woolcombe street, George Bennett, in his 70th year.
* Deceased was a native of Devonshire, married on May 26 1841 and came to this Colony in 1848, in the Bernicia. Soon after he arrived the deceased commenced business as a wood turner and gradually acquiring property in Wellington, which in later years became of great value, was enabled to retire on his measure some 20 years ago. He for many years took a prominent part in the affairs of Wesley Church and made several liberal donations to its funds. Though of a retiring disposition the late Mr Bennett was widely known and respected, so that his death will be heard of with deep regret by many of our readers. It was only a week or so ago that we noticed the celebration of Mr and Mrs George Bennett's golden wedding, when the venerable couple were surrounded by their children, grand children and great grand children. On the Sunday evening before this jubilee celebration Mr Bennett attended service at Wesley Church, but the exertion appeared to have a bad effect on his already impaired health and he took to his bed, never to rise again. He was surrounded by his many relatives when he quietly passed away. He leaves a widow and a family of six to mourn their loss. The three daughters of the deceased are Mrs J. Dixon of Bunnythorpe; Mrs G. Denton and Mrs T. Ralph of Wellington; his sons being Messrs Alfred, Henry and Phillip Bennett, all of this city. The deceased, who was unconscious for 24 hours prior to his death, was attended by Dr Grace in his last illness.

BILLING, James 14 March 1888 aged ?
NZ Mail, 16 March 1888 We regret to learn that Mr James Billing died at the Hospital at midnight Wednesday from the effects of the accident he sustained in Customhouse-quay on Monday night. It will be remembered that he received a fall which resulted in a most serious compound fracture and from the first the worst consequences were feared. This was more especially to be dreaded as Mr Billing was in bad health for some time previous to his death. The immediate cause of death was erysipelas, which set in and speedily proved fatal. Mr Billing was a civil engineer by profession and was a very old resident in Wellington. He was widely known as one of the managers for Messrs Brodgen and Sons, the great railway contractors and his somewhat sudden death will be a shock to his numerous friends. Dr King was with Mr Billing up to the last and all that medical skill could suggest was done to alleviate his sufferings. The primary cause of the accident, viz., tripping over a stone, from its simplicity makes such a serious result appear scarcely credible, but we may state that several accidents of a similar nature causing compound fracture have been known in Wellington. On one occasion a man sustained a compound fracture by slipping off a kerbstone and when he was getting well he slipped of again with the same result. Strange to say, when Mr Billing was picked up after his accident he felt no pain and thought that he had merely suffered a severe sprain which was unfortunately not the case. Mr Billing was unmarried and it is thought that he had no relations in the Colony.

HEADSTONE In Loving Memory Of John Birrel (Of Edinburgh) who fell asleep in Jesus. "Unto him that loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood . to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever, Amen. I stand all bewildered with wonder And gaze on the ocean of love, And over its waves to my spirit Comes peace, like a heavenly dove. The cross now covers my sins; The past is under the blood; I’m trusting in Jesus for all; My will is the will of my God.

BISHOP, Alice Annie 26 Jan 1881 aged 5
BISHOP, Ann Torne (nee Fife) 21 Jan 1894 aged 68
. Ann was born in Chelsea, Middlesex, a daughter of George Fyfe (1795-1834), died Scotland & Agnes Clunie (1795-1877), died Lyttelton.
Interesting Story on her mother, Agnes Clunie ..
After she bore 6 children to George Fife, his father, Earl Fife, 'annulled the marriage' and made George a 'Duke' so his son could be married to royalty. A Duke is higher than an Earl. Agnes told her family that their father, coming home one afternoon was caught in a cold storm, got a bad chill and died! Agnes then married Andrew Allan and had 2 more children, but the marriage didn't flourish. He apparently absconded with the Royal purse given to Agnes by Queen Victoria on the annulment of her marriage. He also appears to have already been married. Her lawyers suggested she come to NZ with a Scottish party leaving by the 'London' for Nelson. She would be able to live more cheaply than in Scotland. With the remains of her money, she came out in 1842 on assisted passages and started a small school at Nelson for young ladies ..
* Ann married William Bishop in 1844, soon after landing in Wellington. In Wellington she was dubbed the 'Duchess of Wellington', so perhaps she flaunted her royal connections. They had 11 children, some buried here, go to her link.

BLACK, Hugh 24 June 1878 aged 38
NZ Mail, 29 June 1878 BLACK - On the 21st June at Wellington, Hugh Black, aged 38 years (formerly of Ballarat, Victoria).
* Mr Hugh Black, the well-known reporter in Australia and New Zealand, died to-day of consumption. Mr Black was for some years on the staff of the 'Ballarat Star' and the 'Melbourne Age' and after coming to New Zealand was engaged on the 'Wanganui Herald', Dunedin 'Guardian' and subsequently in Wellington was on the staff of the 'Argus' and 'Post'. Mr Black, a man of education and ability, was an able reporter and versatile writer. Mr Black perhaps, with the late Alexander Reid, stood at the very top of the profession to which they are now lost. Fourteen years ago Mr Black, although but then quite a young man, was considered one of the first newspaper correspondents in Victoria and occupied that position to the 'Ballarat Star.' But it was not merely as a correspondent that Mr Black excelled - as a short-hand writer he had few equals, while his general knowledge of colonial subjects made him one of the most useful all-round men on the Press. But it was for his excellent qualities of hear that poor Hugh Black was so much respected and esteemed. Of late years a veritable child of misfortune himself, his heart and pocket were always open to those who needed aid and the writer of this notice is aware of sacrifices made by Mr Black to alleviate the misery of others, which were heroic in their character. He has now passed away at an early age and while those who knew him may drop a tear over the sad fate of one whose dawn of life appeared so bright, they will feel comfort in the thought that while in life he lived without an enemy, he takes with him to the grave the regret of all who knew him.

note Merehana chose the name Mary Susan Whitehouse (but, possibly because she was illiterate, she is recorded in a number of records as: Mary, Mary Suzanne, Suzanne, Susan, Susan Mary, Mary Susan). She was also known as Mary Susan Holmes perhaps because of her mother's relationship with John Holmes. She moved up to Wellington about 1850 and proceeded to Napier with her guardians, the Villers. Her first marriage was in Eskdale, Hawkes Bay. A lot of research has gone into her story here

NZ Times, 17 Nov 1875 BOCKETT - At Kaiwarra, on the 15th November, George William Alfred Bockett, aged 29 years; son of the Rev Benjamin Bradney Bockett, Vicar of Epsom, Surrey
Of Interest wonderful story on George's parents .. The Evening Standard, 7 Feb 1828 - 'Mr. Benjamin Bradney Bocket goes a-wooing' - At Hatton Police Court a fashionably dressed young man named Benjamin Bradney Bocket was charged with taking and carrying away the daughter of William Bramwell, Esq., Tavistock Street. Mr. Bramwell had forbidden Bocket his house. The young lady protested that Bocket had won her heart and should have her hand. Her mother, into whose good graces Bocket had crept by displays of evangelical Godliness, supported her. On January 26th Bocket and a man named Johnson entered Mr Bramwell's house. Friends in the house urged Fanny not to go. Bocket said. 'Fanny do not return to your father; he will do you bodily harm. Come with me. Should he attempt to interrupt our flight I will blow his brains out.' Accused was remanded on bail
. Benjamin Bradney Bockett, who had married Fanny Skinner Bramwell in 1829, was inducted to the Vicarage of Epsom, Surrey, (Patroness, Mrs Sarah Pugh, formerly of Abele Grove, Fanny's aunt) on 5 Sep 1839. His residence was mentioned that year as 'an antique edifice, almost hidden from view by some fine trees'. The family appears there in Censuses for 1841 to 1871, his tenure of the Vicarage lasting for more than 40 years and the Tudor styled Victorian porch would have added in that time. He is also likely to have been responsible for the addition of outhouses dated to the middle of the 19th century. These were constructed partly in brick, the rest weatherboard, with pantile roofing and ornate gable ends ... more

Evening Post, 10 Jan 1891 BODLEY - On 9th January, Mary, beloved wife of George Bodley, aged 31 years. Dunedin, Melbourne and Sydney papers please copy.
* Mrs George Bodley, wife of the well-known confectioner on Lambton quay, died very suddenly on Friday. The deceased lady had been an invalid for some time and recently returned from a trip to Sydney, where she had been to consult her medical adviser. Much sympathy is expressed toward Mr Bodley in his great loss.
* It will be a shock to many people to learn that Mrs George Bodley, who has been well known to the general public as the cheery and industrious directress of the restaurant portion of her husband's business, breathed her last yesterday afternoon. For about twelve months Mrs Bodley has suffered from some peculiar muscular or nervous complaint, as to the precise nature of which the medical authorities failed to agree. Its noticeable effects upon herself were a contraction of the muscles of the arms and legs and a hardening of the skip upon those parts of the body, which defied all efforts to produce perspiration. Quite lately Mrs Bodley was in Sydney and appeared before a conference of about seventy medical men, which is periodically held to discuss questions of interest to the profession. No half-dozen of them, we are assured, were able to arrive at the same conclusion as to the character of her ailment. Until within the last few days, though she suffered great discomfort, her condition gave no warning that the end was so near and as late as Thursday evening she went for a tram ride in the hope that that would revive her from depression of spirits. Early yesterday morning she became seriously ill and unconsciousness set in, which continued until the afternoon, when she passed away. Mrs Bodly was exceedingly popular with frequenters of the restaurant, who will join heartily with us in sympathising with her husband in his loss.

. James was badly injured while bush felling near Porirua about 4pm on the Monday. Brandy and opium were administer by his mates and warmth applied to his extremities but it took them an hour to release him from under the tree. They wrapped his leg in an old shirt, took him 3 miles to the whare and had to find a cart to put him on. They finally left the whare about 6.45pm, the road was very rough and they had to walk all the way to Wellington hospital. They forgot there was a doctor in Johnsonville. They didn't inform his father because afraid of the large dog he had on the premises. The injuries were so severe that the leg had to be amputated, however James died next day from exhaustion.
