Bare Knuckle Fighting on Tag Hill - William Calladine 1839

Journal by Dave Calladine

"Dec 1858 - A deposit of ?2 a-side was made on Monday November 29th, at Mr Osborne`s, "four Bums Inn" Taghill, between William Calladine and James Prince, and another deposit of ?1 a-side is to be made on Monday next at the same place. William Calladine is gone into active training at Cotmanhay, whilst James Prince has taken up his quarters at Mr Osborne`s, under the watchful eye of the well-known E. Stainesby, better known by the name of "Rabbi".

Tag Hill was notorious for bare knuckle boxing, and William was 19 years of age at this point. He was a miner, and the eldest son of a frame work knitter, David Calladine, and Elizabeth (nee Butler) of Tag hill in Heanor. They had six known children between 1839 and 1858, the year of the fight mentioned above.

William survived the fight, but the outcome is not known - and wet on to marry Elizabeth Sharley around 1863. Elizabeth was the eldest child of William Sharley and Betsy Wright.

The had eight children, and are shown in the census return of 1881 as living at tag hill
