John died 25 Feb 1936 in a hit & run
Evening Post, 6 April 1936
Auckland, This Day When John William Beeston, 69, an inmate? of the Salvation Army Men's Home (OF INTEREST, there was a Salvation Army Men's Industrial Home at Epsom (erected about 1927) and a Salvation Army Men's Prison-Gate Home at Epsom}, was walking home after church on the evening of Sunday, February 23, he was knocked down by a motor-car and died of his injuries in hospital later. This morning John Reginald Smith appeared in the Police Court on summons before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., charged with negligent driving on the Manukau Road, failing to stop and render assistance, and failing to report the accident to the police.
Messrs R. A. Singer and Bryce Hart appeared for the defendant
Two young men who were sitting in a side road about 8.50pm on February 23 witnessed the accident. They said the deceased was crossing the road. They chased a car on bicycles and saw it stop in front of a block of flats some distance along the road. They took the number of the car but when they reached it the occupant had left. The night was clear and there was no traffic on the road.
A taxi driver gave evidence of being called to the Manukau Road about 9.30pm where a man he knew as Fairlsy entered the taxi and was driven to a house in Buckland Road, Epsom. Witness said he now knew this to be the defendant's house. The case is proceeding.
John William Beeston is buried Soldiers Burial Area, D Row 1, Plot 28 at Waikumete Cemetery
Evening Post, 8 May 1936
The trial of John Reginald Smith, aged 30, company manager, who was charged with negligently driving a motor-car so as to cause the death of John William Beeston, aged 69 was concluded in the Supreme Court today, before Mr Justice Fair.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Manukau Road and the Great South Road (about 4 mins from the home), on the night of February 23 and Beeston died in Auckland Hospital early on the morning of February 25.
His Honour in summing up said the main point for the jury to consider was whether the accused had been negligent or not in failing to see the deceased in the circumstances that existed at the time.
The jury returned after a retirement of four hours with a verdict of guilty with a very strong recommendation to mercy in a written note handed to his Honour. The reason for the recommendation, it was stated, was that it was the unanimous opinion of the jury that the deceased contributed in no small measure to the accident
The accused was remanded for sentence.
- John Reginald Smith was fined £100 in the Supreme Court on 11 May 1936 (this is equivalent to about $10,650 in May 2011) 5 months later, on 5 Oct 1936, John committed suicide.

NZ Herald, 26 June 1888 It is reported from Auckland that a girl named Elizabeth Beeston, aged seventeen, met with a painful accident. She was engaged at the Shirt Manufacturing Company's premises, Great North road and while in the execution of her duties was severely burned. She was a boxmaker and was heating glue in one of the rooms upstairs. She turned round to reach something, when the fire suddenly caught the back of the skirt she was wearing. The girl immediately ran down the stairway, the draught feeding the flames, but when she reached the lower Mrs Jackson, the forewoman, seized her and after some difficulty extinguished the flames, though not until the girl had been severely burned on the legs and back. Dr Mackellar was sent for and dressed the wounds caused by the fire. On his recommendation the unfortunate girl was removed to the district hospital. Here every effort was made to alleviate her sufferings, but it was impossible to recover from such extensive burns and the unfortunate girl she succumbed to her injuries. The jury returned a verdict of "Death from accidental burning" and added a rider concerning the proprietor of the factory for not having the fire more protected.
- The funeral will leave her father's residence, Victoria Quadrant, for Symonds-street cemetery Tuesday at 3 p.m.

In Memoriam, 24 June 1890
BEESTON - In loving memory of Elizabeth Bamford, the dearly beloved daughter of Thomas and Mary Beeston, who died June 24, 1888; aged 17 years.
I was so long with pain oppressed,
It tore my strength away;
It made me long for endless rest
Which never can decay.
She has gone, but not forgotten;
Two sad years have passed to day;
But the thought of her is something
That can never pass away.
- Inserted by her loving mother.

Also His Daughter
~ MARY CHESTER ~
Who Fell Asleep April 30th 1902

Hello Ngairedith, we are researching the BEESTON NZ surname and note that you have listed two John William BEESTON's. We have some details about the J W B born 1830 d 1875, but the other J W B b 1867 does not show up in any of our research. We were wondering if you could when possible tell us if you have any more info on either of these two or direct us to where we may find more info (preferably online). John William Beeston married 1866 Mary Hunt later Chester. This is our brickwall, so any additional info would be much appreciated.
Thanks beeston01
Hi beeston, I will see what I can find and will post the info here
Thank you so much, I have linked up with two other Beeston researchers through this site, so we are pooling our information. The John William Beeston killed in the car accident (Auckland) is a mystery. We have no info on him at all, but his name is the same as our J W Beeston. This surname was I believe quite rare in NZ pre 1900 so we have a dilema with the second J W B. As one piece falls into place another piece requires work.
Again thank you so much
