About Beitz, CARL FRIEDRICH, b.1826
There were two Beitz families that came from Germany, both with the fathers name Carl Freiderich Beitz. (a third family went to USA) . Ours (from Sternhagen) settled in Roma district and the other family (from Gross Fredenwalde) went to the Logan area - Beenleigh.The towns where the 3 Beitz families came from are all within 20 klms of each in Germany - NNE of Berlin -near Prenzlau Was a Tailor (schneider) whilst in Germany, Carl married Christina and lived in a small village, Sternhagen, Prenzlau, Preussen, ?on the shores of the Baltic Sea, Germany. Carl was 39 his wife Christina Wilhelmina Sepke (34), son Carl Frederick Beitz (10) [my second great grandfather], sons Wilhelm(6) and Theodor[ Ted] (6 months) and daughter Wilhelmina (5) when they immigrated to Australia on the 7 Oct 1865 on board the `Johann Cesar` which sailed from Hamburg Germany, and arrived at Morten Bay some 122 days later. The Johann Cesar was a vessel of 414 tons, the crew numbered 14, undeer a Captain Bruck. The carpenter of the ship was washed overboard during the journey. The total number of passengers landed was 241. Seven children and two adults died at sea. The records show that most of the passengers were very poor - dressed only in rags. He immigrated with his family . They had three more children after arrival in Australia, daughter-Annie, son Frank Frederick and daughter Mary. Frederick was born in Rosella Nov 1871. The family moved up as far as Mackay (Rosella) and eventually settled at Hodgson (near Roma) where Carl was employed as a shepard at the Mount Abundance Station for a salar ofappox 26 pounds per year. For the first four years he watched the sheep on foot but when he saved 20 pounds he was able to buy a horse. THIS IS FROM THE AMBY BOOK WRITTEN BY JOHN WILLIAM BEITZ (GRANDSON) AND DOES NOT MATCH UP WITH THE DATES OBTAINED FROM INDEXES AND OTHER SOURCES. The family remained at Hodgson after Carl died at around 50 years of age leaving Christina with 3 small children. Of the family of seven children, six married and produced 47 grandchildren. It was Wilheim (William the second eldest who never married). Per Lyn Curtis - Doris Beitz daughter Carl, his wife, and four children travelled overland from Sternhagen to Hamburg (possibly by train) his occupation is listed as a `schneider` - tailor/cutter. 7.10.1865 left Hamburg on the `Johan Cesar`, 414 tons (crew 14). Non stop voyage via Atlantic and around the Cape of Good Hope to Tasmania, and up to Moreton Bay where they arrived on 6 February 1866. Captain Bruck, 250 passengers of which 241 survived journey. Travelled via Cooyar (north of Toowoomba) to Rosella (6 miles south of Mackay), and then to Hodgson (just west of Roma). Carl took work as a shepherd on stations like Mt Abundance (Roma) for 26 pounds a year. In an email from Julie states that Carl Frederick died in 1876 at Hodgson- this according to his sons coronial inquest in 1906.
It is no wonder these immigrants became so hard mentally and physically . how hard that travelling must have been . I can't help but admire them and look at the list of Beitz relatives on the Mannwaring site on tribal pages .com Now ( 92 ) Their is one other site with over ( 200 ) but it is a. locked site and you need to apply for access to the site. I think I might do some other stories on this family < so much interest has been shown on what I have put to members already in regards to this family - Till we meet again
