hi Kirstmac1,
that's a rather impressive ancestor to have :). He arrived in NZ long before all the influx of immigrants/settlers.
Your grandmother Muriel was born 3 Dec 1893 and died 15 June 1978. Who was her husband? because if you follow him back he should lead you to either Thomas or Robert Brown as per the list below ...
Captain Robert Brown (-1844) arrived in Otago on the 'Glory' in 1823. He 'married' Te Wharerimu shortly after and had 5 children (dates are approx)
- first half-caste child born in southern NZ
- married Mary Thomas, a daughter of a shore whaler
- married Tini 'Jane' Palmer, daughter of Ned Palmer's uncle, Edward Palmer & Patahi
- married whaler John Howell of Riverton
- married the Tasmanian born whaler Ned Palmer
- married Tame Parata (1837-1917) later MP for Southern Maori
Ned (Edward) Palmer was one of three Palmer men who played a significant role in the history of whaling and agriculture at Taieri, NZ. All three married Nga Tahu women and fathered large families.
