Coffelt family tree

Journal by sdsmith

I'm Shannon De'Nee Norris Smith(female)Mother Karen Denise Norris, her mother Josephine Coffelt, father Leon Norris(died 4-4-94). My grandparent's, the Norris' raised me in Altoona,Alabama, I took my mother's maiden name, she was unmarried. But my father is Roland Johnson from Nectar,Ala. I have 2 sons, last name Baugh born 1997 from a previous marriage, and Smith born 2002 from my present marriage. I'm researching the Leo Coffelt(died around 1983) ancestry line. He was my great grandfather, father of Josephine Coffelt Norris, my Grandmother. Leo's wife was Francis Cleveland(died 1976). They last resided in Altoona,Ala. But Leo was from Marion County Tennessee, a descendant of the Bible(Biebel)family, and the Coffelts or Kauffelt's. Leo's children were Floyd(deceased),Josephine,Velma"Sis"(deceased),Mary Ruth,James"Buddy"(deceased), & Morris(deceased). There were 2 babies that died. I believe there names were G.Coffelt(male)and L.Coffelt(female),and they are buried in Orme Mtn Cemetery next to their grandfather John Cleveland who was the husband of Lydia Lou Alice Anderson Cleveland, and they are the parents of Leonard,Charles,Robert,Tennie,Mary and my ggrandmother Francis Angeline Cleveland. I visited Orme TN recently and it is so beautiful there and I just feel like I'm home even though I never lived there. I wished I knew where John and Lydia lived. Lydia is buried in Mt Carmel at Bridgeport,AL in unmarked grave, at least that's what I was told by my Grandmother Norris and there are no records for her there I can find and I even spoke with the cemetery caretaker. My other relatives in Orme were George and Alice Hannah Coffelt, my gggrandparents,David Coffelt and Susan Bible Coffelt, my ggggrandparents. I believe they are buried in the Dove Cemetery. Not far from them lived Susan's parents, Phillip Bible and Rebecca Naomi Speegle Bible in Comfort,TN which is also known as the Fiery Gizzard. Phillip and Rebecca are buried in the Bible Cemetery. So far from what I've researched, I've found mostly German ancestry. If you have any info, please let me know, thanks.

Hi Buddy or any other Coffelt kin, My mother is Kathleen Coffelt. Her father is James Edward Coffelt. Grandpa & grandma used to travel to Coalmont, Grundy County, Tennessee to visit or have Coffelt family reunion. Grandpa past away in1995 in South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana. Grandma is still alive but cant remember the names of any of the Coffelts they visited. I' trying to find the relatives that they visited to ask & share family history. I have a lot of documentation on my Coffelt line but I would like more documentation. Does anyone have copies of George Jacob Coffelts will or estate or his father Joanne Valentinte Coffelt or his father Nicolas Coffelt's will or estate ? Did Elias from Germany have an estate or will ? Does anyone know who Jacob Coffelt born 1831 Ohio married Edith Jackson in Indiana & died in 1884 in Iowa ? Trying to find parents for descendant of Jacob & Edith Coffelt.

Need to get in touch with Teri Strotman. I see her on these Coffelt And Bible family history sites. Mostly on rootsweb. She has our family tree back to 1600-1700

Hello Everyone,
My name is Joyce from Wisconsin and researching the Coffelts that came from Germany, through Nicholas, Daniel, Elijah, Rosetta, Laura, Louise, Joyce that's me!

I am having difficulty showing where Daniel was at all times. There appears to be a Tennessee Daniel, connected to a Indiana/Pennsylvania Daniel. Any help would be appreciated and I am glad to share all my info also.

I was just searching for Lydia Cleveland death date, and saw your post to Rootsweb. Lydia was my great-grandmother (John Leonard, also spelled Lynard but correct birth record is John Leonard Cleveland, was my maternal grandfather). I recently had got an ancestry search – from what I can gather, Lydia died in 1915 . It looks like it might have been about the time Robert was born (5-14-15)– she was only 34 so I can’t help but wonder if she died in childbirth. I met Tennie once, she came to my grandfather’s funeral in 1967, but have no other information on any of the other siblings …..Francis (Cleveland Coffelt), Mary, Charles or Robert. I assume Lydia must have been buried in the Orme area but don’t have her birth or death certificate. If you have any additional information on her, please let me know. I assume that we are distant cousins. I hope to travel to Orme this summer to get more information.

Well I have two distant cousins who commented here. Hi everyone! I know it's been a while since you posted williamsk1950 and Michaeln but here gf Leo Coffelt (1898-1984),married Francis Angeline Cleveland in Marion co. Tn.They later moved to Altoona, the late 1920's where they raised their children. My gm parents were John Leonard Cleveland and Lydia Johnson. Williamsk1950, Orme, as you probably know is in Marion Co, Tn.and lies along the Tn/All state lines. Well, Lydia is buried just across that line in Jackson co. Alabama, in a unmarked grave in My Carmel Cemetery. Uncle Robert Cleveland is buried there also, along with his wife Grace and their son R. E. Cleveland. I remember Aunt Mary very well. She often visited my gm Francis, her sister in Altoona, Al.where I grew up. She was a big cut-up and she loved her snuff lol. I knew uncle Robert too. A good man, he was. I never knew Aunt Tennie but remember meeting her once. Seems as though I recall her having moved to Florida. She married a Weaver...George maybe? Sorry to say I never met Uncle Leonard, your ggf. But, there was another, Charles who died rather young, I believe. And,on his death certificate is where I found Lydia,s maiden name, Johnson. Would love to hear from you. My email address is
Now Michael, I knew your grandparents Jim & Deamie Coffelt.Went to there house in Altoona Al.many times as a child.I met Kathleen a time or two, as well as Emmanuel. But, the ones I knew most were Jimmy Dean and Harold. Not sure exactly how my Coffelts and your are related, but I know they are.
My Coffelt line going all the way back to Germany is listed on You can find them by going to the site map, then click" find ancestors" , If you type in my gf name, "Leo Elias Coffelt" they should get you started.
I'm still trying to find info on Lydia Johnson Cleveland though. I know her dad was David and mother Angeline Ledford or Tedford. If anyone has any info on them I'd be delighted.
