Lawrence Bedford was born in Prestwich, in England on 25th September 1905. He immigrated to Australia with his parents in 1911 and grew up in the Goulburn Valley, where he worked on his father’s farm. As a teenager, he would find work in the area with a team of horses. In 1930 he met Elsie Davis who was working locally as a domestic, and after a very short courtship they were married on 20th September 1930.
John Sutherland had a clothing and haberdashery shop in Allan St known as Sutherland Federal Store. He eventually sold this and moved a few doors down and opened a grocery store.
J.W. Sutherland’s son Max took over from his father as manager in 1938, although his father remained in the business until his death in 1947.
In December 1945 the drapery section was sold to Mr Perc Pike, trading as Pike’s Federal Drapery Store. Max Sutherland introduced self service to Kyabram in 1952, and in early February 1960 he moved to Mr Walton’s new building at 252 Allan St — now Autopro.
