ALFRED died from the effects of breathing in battery dust at Waihi
Ohinemuri Gazette, 11 January 1896 Another death caused by the constant inhaling of battery dust has occurred at Waihi, the latest victim being Mr Alfred Dance (says the Paeroa correspondent of the Auckland Herald.) Deceased was about 36 years of age, and leaves a wife and three children to mourn their loss. Mr Dance had been employed in the Waihi Company's battery for the past two years, and was altogether only ten days seriously ill before he succumbed. This, it appears, makes the fifth death in the Ohinemuri district from the inhaling of battery dust, while I understand two other men are seriously ill - one at the Auckland Hospital, and the other at the Thames - from the same cause. This is rather serious, considering the short time the dry crushing has been in vogue in these parts
