Derbyshire Porritts
I am researching Porritts from Derbyshire, England in particular from Chapel-en-le-Frith, Chinley and Alfreton. I have a copy of the Derbyshire Porritt tree going back to the 16th Century if anyone is interested. Unfortunately, some of the BMD dates are missing due to gaps in the Derbyshire Parish Records. I am particularly interested in a William Porritt 1796 who married an Ann (Cooper or Heward)abt 1818.

I am looking for Samuel Porritt born about 1827. He is the great grandfather of my relative in the USA. He is buried in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The cemetery archive says: born 1827c; died 24 April 1885. On the tombstone it says "native of Derbyshire, England". I hope you can help in this search as he and I have been searching without success for some time. It looks as if the problem could be due to the gaps in the parish records.

Further to my last message, I have found a Samuel Porritt in the UK 1851 census who could be the one I have been searching for. The head of the household is a William Snape in Bollington, Cheshire. Samuel, aged 24, is married to William's daughter. Her name appears to be shown as Brody but I have ordered a marriage certificate for 1848 that appears to have her name as Rhoda. Samuel is shown as born in Hayfield, Derbyshire. I would be very interested to know if you have any further information on this Samuel and I would also very much like to see your Porritt family tree that you mention in your journal. Peter
I have a William Porritt born about 1793 in Chinley in my tree. His wife's name was Ann - last name unknown. Sounds like we both met the same road blocks! Their son James (1818-1901 was my great grandfather. Does this help any?
Judith
Hello Judith, I am afraid I haven't looked at it for a while. I can't remember what I was doing at the time, but think I was probably trying to find out more about William's wife Ann?
My husband's uncle (George Henry Colin Cooper) was the son of Wilfred L. Cooper who married Hannah Porritt (1872) daughter of James and Ann Bramwell. I think you might be related as James had a lot of children? Sadly GHC Cooper did not have any, but was close to his nephew and nieces, one of whom was my husband.
