New Bryan Sykes book has information about the surname project using the Pomeroy family.
Various spellings were included to determine whether a direct line of yDna could be traced toa single ancestor.
In my branch of the family (Arizona) we spelled our name Pomeroy but pronounced it Pumroy. Easy to see
how variants have come about.
