Emmigration from Scariff to Cape Horn

Michael, Bridget and Margaret Tobin emmigrated to Cape Horn, before coming to N.Z. in 1872.
Family story has indicated that this move to Cape Horn was a village or church arrangement. Can any one tell me if this was correct and what motivated such a move.
Any information about immigration to the Cape by people from Scariff or Co. Clare would be greatly appreciated.
