Finnie of Scotland

Journal by kowhai

John Finnie is beieved to have been born 1809 Tongland Kirkcudbright.
He spent most of his adult life in the Army, married Jessie Birch and they had 4 children, Mary Ann, Jane, Jessie, & Edward Birch. John came to N.Z with the Fencibles 1849. Within a short time John left his family and where he went or died is not known, neither is it known what happened to his wife Jessie Birch who had a colourful record on the Police Files. Nothing has been found on Jessie Birch's early life but it is believed she may have been born in Ireland.

I live in Alabama, USA. My mother was born in New Zealand and we are ancesters of John and Jessie Finnie. Their oldest daughter Mary Ann (Marianne?), and her second husband James McVicar(Stanley)are my great grandparents. I am very interested in our genealogy and I hope to be able to share our research. I think that the Canadian connection comes from the fact that John Finnie was a member of the 1st Foot Regiment and served in Canada in 1838-39. Mary Ann (b. 1842?) was 7 years old when her family arrived in New Zealand on the troopship Oriental Queen in 1849 from Scotland and settled in Onehunga.
