Frederick William Jackman
Born: 10 Oct 1876
Died: 20 Oct 1950
. NOTE On his headstone Frederick is engraved 20-10-1950 aged 82 (birth year of 1868). NZ BDM also has he was 82. Headstone also has that he served as Rifleman 51735.
This is conflicting because Frederick William Jackman (Rifleman 51735) was born 10 Oct 1876 in Otago. His next of kin was his brother, Marcus Thomas Jackman (1870-1947) in Romahapa. They were sons of Frederick William Jackman (1835-1903) & Eliza (1837-1901). My conclusion: the headstone is incorrect and should read aged 73 (10 days from 74).

* This is the death notice of their mother .. Otago Witness, 26 June 1901 Mrs JACKMAN, aged 64 years, an old and respected resident of Glenomaru, died very suddenly on Wednesday morning as the result of an apoplectic stroke. Mrs jackman, who had been in the best of health and spirits, was preparing her son's breakfast when she was struck down. The ceased lady was a native of Beer Alston (Devonshire) and came out in the 'May Queen' in 1867 to join her husband, who had been in the colony for some years, at Glenomaru. They visited England in 1873, returning three years later. Mrs Jackman is survived by her husband, a daughter and two sons

Barrett Ivan 'Russian Jack' Krumen
(sometimes written Crumen)
Born: 1878
Died: 19 Sep 1968
. Most of the following was taken from Russian Jack . One of the most famous swaggers of the Wairarapa. A man simply known as Russian Jack. Although his origins have been disputed between Russia and the Ukraine, he was actually born in Latvia. He joined the merchant marine when he was 24 and spent the next decade working as a seaman. His arrival in NZ was probably not intentional. He was working on a British Ship, the 'Star Of Canada' when caught in a storm off Gisborne 23 June 1912. The ship was wrecked, the crew rescued and brought ashore. Legend has it that he needed to get to Wellington to catch another ship. He started walking and although he eventually made it to Wellington, he never went to sea again. He just kept walking, mostly around the Wairarapa, gaining quite a reputation. He worked on farms in his youth to make a living. He was fond of a smoke and would often call on Bill Kemp, Mayor of Masterton, who was known to grow and cure his own tobacco. Many people claim to have known him (I personally did and would pull over whenever I saw him and give him a cigarette and have a chat, although his English was not good, he always spoke quietly and was pleasant and polite). He was in his late 80s when he finally gave up the swaggers life. He was admitted to Pahiatua Hospital with frostbitten feet and later transferred to Greytown Hospital where he died aged 90. A statue celebrating his life can be found next to the Masterton Library.
