He was born Sussex in UK in 1820. I believe he and his brother George were found guilty of robbery and both were sentenced to 10 years in Australia. George died before he was due to leave That is all I have on him.

Hello Bluyeybren
So we can get some dates out there I will add that the Marion left Portland, England 2 Nov 1851 bound for the Swan River Colony. She carried the sixth of 37 shipments of male convicts destined for Western Australia. It arrived in Fremantle on 30 Jan 1852 with 30 passengers and 279 convicts.

Stephen Gatrell has been transcribed on the list as Stephen Gathell.
He was born 22 July 1819 in West Dean, Sussex, to Joseph Gatrell & Margaret Brunder.
Stephen was sentenced in 1850 in Lewes, East Sussex, for House breaking and larceny for which he received 10 years. At time of sentence he was 31.

It is possible that it was Stephen Gatrell who had the license for the Board and Lodging house in Fremantle in 1885.
There was a Stephen, spelt Gatterall, who died 25 March 1897 in Fremantle

In 1890 Stephen & his wife Mary were living in Market Street, Fremantle when they were called as witnesses in the death of Ellen Scott

Still looking for this marriage and maybe children. Mary died 20 March 1915 aged 72 and is buried Plot 668, Section MON CC, at Fremantle
