Gatt Malta
Hi I am looking for any information about the GATT families in Malta. My grandmother was known as "Mary" but we believe she was baptised as Emilia Carmella Philippa Suzanna Gatt, born Sliema abt 1895.
Her father may have been Alberto Gatt and her mother Margherita Inguanez.
Until I find the missing links between Mary and her parents and a definate marriage for her I cannot go any further.
The story goes that she was a nurse at a hospital and met and married my grandfather "Bert" Owen a soldier of the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry.
He is a puzzle as we are not sure what he registered himself as Herbert or Albert and it is said he lied about his age to get into the army too!
They married abt 1921 in Malta, had one daughter Mary there, moved to Shropshire and had 3 or 4 other children, including my father born 1929.
"Mary" died in 1933, so my father does not know whether she had any siblings/family left in Malta. He never asked about his mother's family, as back then no-one spoke about things like they do now.
I would love to know if anyone has any information regarding this branch of my family and as to whether there are any living rellies looking for us!

Hello, Bertie Thomas Owen was born abt Aug. 1896 in Shifnal, Shropshir & died abt May, 1965 in Clun, Shropshire. He married Mary Asumpta Gatt 27 Sept., 1921 in Sliema, Malta. Mary was born 19 Sept, 1899 in Sliema, Malta & died Sept. 1933 in Shifnal, Shropshire. Their children were: A female still living (no name found), Mary E. Owen 1922-2012;Richard Owen-1923-1996;Albert Anthony Owen;1927-2002. I hope this information will be of help to you. It came from Ancestry. My husband is a Gatt and his grandparents were from Malta.

Hello, I went back on to Ancestry & discovered several family trees that have done research on your family plus a picture of Mary & Bertie. Mary E. was the daughter born in Malta & she married a Joseph Jarema. They lived in Wellington, Shropshire. Phyllis G. Owen is the daughter not shown & she married David Haggarty, also in Wellington, Shropshire. Apparently Richard Owen is actually Benjamin Richard Owen. There is a fair bit of history on Ancestry if you want to check it out. You can get two weeks free. Good Luck in your research.
