Steve
I had a look at the Geelong cemetery records on line, but they do not seem to go back far enough for your Mary.
They do ask that if you have a death certificate indicating a burial at Geelong that you notify them so that they can be included in their records.
Best wishes
Judianne
If Mary died in 1871 she will be buried in the Old Geelong Cemetery. As far as I know there are no records available for burials. I obtained some burial details
online a few years ago and the details had been taken from the headstones, but I have not been able to locate this site online again.
I'm sure it was called the Old Geelong Cemetery but I may be wrong, but I do remember this cemetery was in or near Geelong.
Thanks to you both
It appears that the earlier burials are recorded on Burial Dates as 1st January 1900 at Geelong Cemetery
Geelong Old refers to Geelong Eastern and administered today by the Geelong Cemeteries Trust.
The first burial there was Hugh Niven in 23 September 1839. Before 1877 when a general trust was formed, the cemetery was administered by the different denominations, each having their own grave diggers and sexton.
Phthsis is a wasting of a part of the body. If it was pulmonary it's another name for tuberculosis
'phthisis' sorry can't spell today Steve. Pronounced tysis.
That could be the cemetery Jenilye.
The site I used only gave headstone readings, but there were a lot of graves without headstones. I was lucy, the ones I wanted did. I've been trying to find the site again but having no luck. May not be online any more.
You may have better luck searching for the funeral notice Steve.
Thanks Janilye & Tonkin
Its not easy with names like Mary & William Jones
So far havent been able to find a funeral notice, may need to go to State Libray a check papers. Maybe Geelong Hospital records might give me some information
I think I was lucky to find the right death cert.
Thanks again
I expect this will be the death of your Mary JONES.
Name: Mary Jones.
Died: 1871 SOME, Victoria.
Age: 46 years.
Father: unknown SOLDER.
Mother: Not recorded.
Ref: Registry of Deaths, Victoria. Reg #3923.
Death place SOME. This will be Somerton or Somerville.
Your source gives Mary's date of death. Does it give place of death?
It's also possible Mary was not buried in Geelong.
It's never easy Steve.
Thats Strange. I have death cert 3923
It clearly states that she died Rosemary Lane, Geelong 2nd May 1871 and is buried in Geelong Cemetery.
Strange indeed ... but I'm not surprised.
Just looked at the VDI again (Reg #3923) and it gives death place as SOME.
The certificate will be correct.
Could someone else take a look and confirm death place recorded by VDI.
Sorry my error.
Death certificates in 1871 did not record place of death, only place of birth.
It's been a long day.
I have seen this reference before. As stated death Some?
The cert states that she was born Somersetshire, England
Thank you so much for the help
