George Clarke 1821 1839
edmondsallan - Good morning . . I am looking out the window in front of my computer / office / workshop watching the world Rushing about . The window size is ( 7 ft x 5 ft ) in fact all the windows are large in this old Heart Matai House with a lot of Kauri timber also . Cars are rushing past , people off to their daily grind and me & my animal companion " Jasmine " have the blind 1/2 up , and because we are facing right in the middle of North & South ( east ) the sun is just pouring in . I had better stop raving . Just felt like saying a big hello to everyone , its just so nice sitting here . Ok - we are hiting the straps >>>> " Edmonds Holding file " under 1821 onward .
Name - " Clarke " - george ?
" george Clarke " married " Martha Elizabeth Blomfield "in 1821. they had ( 13 ) children . They sailed for New Zealand on the 25th of April 1822 on board the ship " Heroine " On their way they called in Hobart & disembarked at Sydney to work on an Aboriginal Settlement in Parramatta .They left Sydney in March 1824 . " george - his wife - & eldest son, also called George, arrived in Kerikeri . Bay of Islands , aboard the French Corvette " Coquille " on board also were some naturalists , who openly stated that _ I quote > " Missionary Clarke had adopted a manner at odds with his humble beginings " End Quote . In other words " He was a stuck up prig and thought himself as king of the Jungle . Its a funny thing , that " Hone Heke " was a a real proud Maori chief , but he wasn't stuck up . ' Hone Heke ' took a liking to our " george " and they came to respect each other, big time . Both assisted each other in many ways .( I see I have quite a few notes on that , Could make a story / journal ???? )
After his arrival " Clarke " established a school for Maori children , at which he taught elementary school subjects. He reported in his first year that the maori parents he was working with , had a thirst for Blood , and spoke a Rude & barbarous Language . A year later in his report , I see he says a year later . what a great race of people they were and how they had become friends and helped him tremendously . In 1838 , he wrote to his father , trying to persuade him to come to NZ. He also sent a large amount of monies home for him to do so .
In 1830 /31 with assistance from William Yate , Richard Davis and James Hamlin , he founded the Waimate Mission Station . Later on 1832 to 1839 "Clarke & Davis " managed the CMS model farm atwaimate North and for part of the time acted as secretary of the CMS Committee in NZ - time for a cuppa - regards - edmondsallan
