Graytown is situated in the centre of Victoria (Mt Moormbool being the geographical centre) 22 Klm south west of Nagambie.

The Graytown Cemetery is situated on the north side of the Nagambie/Costerfield Road, along a graded forest road, just to the east of the old P.O.W. camp.

Not an easy Cemetery to find and don't ask the locals where it is, they keep this knowledge to themselves! Not that I blame them as the Cemetery has been vandalized many times in the past. The Cemetery sign has also been removed from the main road and if one is desperate enough to want to go there......they will find it!

The Cemetery was very much "unloved" and "uncared for" with the forest taking over prior to the dedication of Corporal Steve Anderson and Yvonne Cochrane. While Steve was stationed at Seymour he took an interest in this Cemetery and in his `spare' time, cleared the trees, scrub, rubbish and old tree stumps. He also had the `help' of the vehicles (and their drivers!) of the Australian Army. Yvonne spent many hours not only helping Steve but also going through the records at the PRO and elsewhere, locating any mention of Graytown residents.

One of the major obstacles has been a lost plan for burial. In spite of extensive enquiries it has not been recovered, and it is hoped that it may be in the possession of one of the families of old trustees or residents of Graytown, who would not realise how important it is to the restoration project. While an accurate burial register is being compiled (by Yvonne) putting names to the grave is impossible unless the plan is found.

There are - up till 1994 - 262 confirmed burials but Steve and Yvonne have put the number closer to 400. Of the 262 known burials, 131 are infants and small children. Infant mortality was high and many families lost one or two children to sicknesses that today there are immunizations and cures for.

The German Heritage Society and a number of other interested person's have also been helping with the restoration of the Cemetery, painting, clearing and creating a walking track. There is now a well defined car park and the fences have been repaired too.

A wander around the Cemetery will also show where the Chinese are, buried apart from the rest because they weren't Christians.

Spring Creek was the original name for Graytown........Gold being discovered in 1868 and for the next three years Graytown boasted a population of over 30,000 gold diggers!

On page one of Joyce Hammonds book - The Graytown Goldrush - she says:

"Spring Creek is still there - a small creek that proved to be a conquering giant - it gurgles victoriously over its win through the quiet de-populated forest, the scene of one of the richest goldfields.

But alas! During one unforgettable night in 1870, a sudden freak storm and heavy rain hit Graytown. Spring Creek joined with torrents of flood waters and neighbouring creeks to flood the many hundreds of deep mine shafts - some with gold mining tools left from the day before. Had the flood occurred in the daytime instead of at night, many hundreds of miners would have been drowned down in their shafts - the catastrophe of nature happened so quickly.

The great flood of 1870 finally reduced Graytown overnight to a "deserted village".

My great, great grandparents lived in the Costerfield and Graytown area from 1865 until 1873. Both of them being buried at the Graytown Cemetery.

Thomas RICHARDS married Grace GILBERT in March of 1830.......the family leaving Cornwall in 1848. Thomas died at Graytown on 18 November 1869, the day his daughter was married. He died of a strangulated hernia.......too sick to sign the certificate, but managed to give his verbal consent just prior to his death!
