About Hansen, Ole Christian, 1882
Grandad Hansen came from Norway and arrived in NZ c1905 as an Able Seaman aboard the steamship, "America"..... Records show that he was on board when she sailed, but none exist of his re-entry into NZ after that date. Story goes that he "jumped ship" somewhere off North Head, Devonport and swam back to Auckland. Later in life he told his children and Grandma Hansen that he ran away from home as a 15yr old and went to sea, never to go back home again..... He also told them that his father owned a shipping line and that his father was lost at sea. He told them that he thought he was related to the Norwegian Royal Family because both he and his mother were in the Official Entourage that followed the Kings coffin..... Our father, and mums brothers, used to call him (no doubt when he wasn`t in earshot) "Holy Christ" as in Ole Kristian....
