Hello

My name is Doug Sunnex am trying to do Sunnex family tree
Have come to dead ends in all directions (some had only daughters or had sons died early)
so tried the other end but because of lack of info allowed to public cannot trace the other way ,have over 120 sunnex in tree at moment and have over 200 more that i cannot add because do not have access to get info on who is mother and father to who,etc
Can any help with everything they know to further my progress

Thanks Family tree circles
I do understand very hard and difficult to trace Sunnex ancestors because of over 40 different name changes (variations)
Many years ago i was told because of poor education and illiteracy people wrote what it sounded like
Also was told,do not know if true that if yor were born in a town etc your surname was named after it
Sunnex was originally Seven Oaks ( i always thought Sussex but could be a variation )and gradually over the generations changed in many variations until become Sunnex

hello Doug,

tell us which country your Sunnex were from and a few first names and dates would help a lot.

dougsun

So far I have traced Sunnex name back to John Sunnex 177O - 1830 in Kent England
but have noticed from other trees married to Elizabeth Dilly and Mary Smith with same children,so do not know which is correct yet
Cannot go back any further
His ancestors immigrated to New Zealand and have about 120 families all in my tree but have come to a dead end again
I live in a small town and many Sunnex live or have lived here and have been asked many times are we related, but again tracing backwards is difficult too because nobody seems to know their ancestors past their great grandfather or even their grandfather, looking at newspaper clippings, wedding, birth death notices, electrol rolls does not always give you enough leads
With the privacy act I think this is why many trees do not have much info on the last 40 to 50 years, unless you are prepared to spend a lot of money getting copys of certificates etc.

John SUNNEX (1770-1930) marrie Elizabeth DILLY in Dartford, Kent

their son William SUNNEX (1794-1883) emigrated to New Zealand TYNE, leaving London 25 March 1841, arriving Wellington 9th August 1841

With him was his wife Eliza (nee WEBLEY) (1808-1897) and children

  • Frances Sunnex
  • Mary Ann Sunnex
  • Sarah Sunnex (1828-)
  • Maria Ellen Sunnex (1836-1922)
  • William Sunnex (1839-1918)

they settled in Taita and had further children:

  • Thomas Charles Sunnex (1841-1897)
  • John Sunnex (1843-1826)
  • Emma Elizabeth Sunnex (1845-1893)
  • Phoebe Ann Elizabeth Sunnex (1850-1902)

some of the surnames of spouses of these children are:
MUDGWAY, CLARKE, FERGUSON, SOUTHEE, SYMES, HANNING, THOMAS, ROBINDON, HARRIS, WYETH,

William died 14 years before Eliza who is buried in St John`s cemetery in Upper Hutt. Some have said that William is buried in the
Christ Church Taita Cemetery but rhere is no record of him there...

as you say, this is just one branch

dougsun

Thanks for your reply,all helps
I already have William And Eliza children but have two more
Eleanor Sunnex 1831-1835
Robert Sunnex unknown
Would be good to get a branch off other children of John Sunnex and Elizabeth Dilly, looks like they stayed in England?
Cannot find any children to William Sunnex 1839-1918 and Annie Loiusa Sunnex (Symes)
1855-1940

Hi just read your request for information on the name of Sunnex. There was a family of Sunnex living in Ngaruawahia NZ Two sisters Jane I"m sorry but do not recollect the other sisters name.Jane had Five children three girls and two boys .Her husband was English, although Jane was Maori.I believe that three of the children now live in Australia, and Jane is still alive. The other sisters name has just come back to me ,it was Kath Sunnex who had a son Les who I believe is still alive and living in Ngaruawahia.I agree the privacy laws make things difficult.I hope that this is some help.

Thanks for your information
Jane and Kath does ring a bell, just will have to check back on my hundreds of pages of notes, can sort of remember from newspaper clippings a family there, also a Sunnex boy or boys were popular playing rugby or league. All helps thanks
Still biggest problem is getting them to fit into tree, without birth and death, marriage dates and mother and fathers and so forth
But thanks again

SUNNEX.. Now I am helping a lady down South Island to try and find her Grandmother... Sunnex comes into the tree! She is looking for Laura Violet born in Wairarapa in the mid 1880's. No birth certificate, we have hunted high and low! She lived with Elizabeth and Thomas Sunnex (as far as I know, this was Anderson Line Clareville/Carterton, not far from the cottage that Thomas Sunnex built on the main road. When Elizabeth died Laura lived with Sarah Ann nee WILLIAMS. and James Henry HANNEN and attended OHAU school under the name of HANNEN. 1904 Laura married a William Edwin Jukes, lived Owhango. she died aged 4l years in 1926. If anyone recognises names, please get in touch with me and I can pass anything on to her in Canterbury. Thanks everyone.. I am at Clareville hence helping! I have contacted many Sunnex folk, no luck as yet, but a local rang today with a lead to follow! as its in our local community paper this week.. Person I have to ring is in P.North.. I am hoping to shortly check local school records, as sometimes a clue could be there! Its the Williams that has been stumped and Hannen, latter moved to Dannevirke.

dougsun

I have two Thomas Sunnex married to a Elizabeth plus a few other Thomas i cannot add into my tree.
One couple was likely because they lived in that area of Clareville however they had twelve children but none named Laura Violet
One unnamed child born 1882 but died same year
If Laura Violet was living with them could it be possible she was not a Sunnex ?
Maybe born to another mother, nothing surprises me now after some facts i have discovered

thanks for the reply, we may have solved the puzzle, but we have to check up with names someone came up with tonight off list to me, then see! will keep the list informed of any outcomes..

Hi all. I am a relative (by marriage) of Thomas Alfred Sunnex (d 1972) late of Ngaruawahia N.Z. His second marriage was to Hilda Mary Rickard (my mother's sister) they had one child Jill Ula? Sunnex (married Bruce Thompson). Jill died in about 1970/80. Tom had two daughters by his first wife, Betty (married Bob ? and moved with him to the U.S.A post WWII) . Joan married Bill Mathis and also moved to U.S.A post WWII. Joan and Bill have three children to my knowledge, I have lost contact with them. Can't help at all with Bet and Bob.i can remember Kath from my days in Ngaruawahia (1945 to 1953). I also knew Tom's sister Bunny (believed to be Mabel Francis married Stanley Cutts). Suggest you search Thomas Alfred Sunnex genealogy NZ, Charles John Rickard Genealogy NZ etc. Good hunting.

George Sunnex Jnr here from Ngaruawahia Grandfather was Tom Sunnex Grandmother Kath ( Jonathan or Honetana ) Sunnex ..ask away for any questions I could help with

dougsun

Thanks for your reply
I do not have you incorporated in the family tree
You say your grandfather was Tom & grandmother Kath ( again not in tree yet)
I have over 300 sunnex's that i cannot add into tree as i cannot connect as do not have enough information
What i need is more info like mothers and fathers name & their children and most importantly their birth dates and death dates if applicable as well as their grandparents.
Also middle names can help a lot
Suddenly you find one you can connect when you get more info.
The list i have many have just come to dead end as i do not have parents or children names so just sit in a file
Would be good if you can help with any info. you can get

Hi. Just wondering if anyone is still actively researching the family tree.
I have inherited a mountain of info and have put together a fairly impressive tree. Theres a few loose ends but I think reasonably accurate.

There appears to be a lot of incorrect info out there re - who belongs to who and the confusion is definately not helped by so many with the same names.

Feel free to email me if you want further info of where you fit into the scheme of things.

Regards,Joy Adams (nee Sunnex)

ngairedith

hi Joy, best suggestion (and we would all love to see), why don't you write a journal on this page with all the info you have. That way you can right the wrongs 😁. It's also easy to edit and change your data at any time.
Look forward to it.

JOY59

Your kidding?
I have pages and pages.
Best option for now is anyone looking for info, just email me mother/father and as much info and I will cross reference.
So much of the information on ancestry and family search is wrong.
No wonder people are confused.
