I'm a Campbell and did not find any free assistance by belonging to the Clan Campbell Society of North America, except possibly via their periodic publication where articles appear about Campbell genealogy back inside Scotland. I joined ANCESTRY.COM to use their record collections, mainly the US Census reports. I have found some familial clues by examining their neighbors that are listed on the same census page as my ancestors. I traced my Campbell line back to one born about 1808 in Tennessee, found living in Illinois in the 1850 and later census'. He had no listed middle name nor initial and finding him as a 32YO in Tenn. in the 1840 census is proving a chore. Lots of candidates without any clue as to how to find the right one.
However, I must trace his line back to where one of them emmigrated from Scotland, Ireland or possibly England. Many Scots took detours through these other countries on their way into the USA. Good luck, "HARRYRCAMPBELL@ATT.NET"
Thanks for that Harry, I wasn't sure about that web site, not having any Scots in America. But I do have many in Scotland and the very best is, Scotlands People. http://ww1.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ happy hunting to you both
