He also appears on the 1870 and 1880 censuses with Bettie Moore a black female that he has several children wth. They have been found on at least one legal document together, involving the sell of tobacco. There is no mention of her death but there is a will for Benjamin, and another document referencing their son, Tinker.

I would not assume that Bettie Moore is the mother of the children. You can check for the births on familysearch.org

There is a Bettie Moore in Lunenburg County, Virginia in 1900 census that is listed as a mother-in-law?

ELax

When Henry (William H), and Peter J (PJ)married they listed Bettie and Ben as their parents. When John married the 2nd time he went so far as to list Benj. Hawthorn and Betty Moore. There was a dau. (Nellie) that died in 1886 and brother (Tinker)provided the information and named Benjamin and Bettie as the parents. And one last piece of info, when Bettie died in 1883, her last name was Hawthorn and for "consort or married" there is Ben Hawthorn;the provider of info was Tinker, son. The 1880 census has her listed as a concubine.

Oh one more thing, Familysearch.org is where I found the info on John/Jno. Hawthorn. I love this site!
