If you know the name of your ancestor and the approximate time he/she emigrated, try www.familysearch.org filling in the name and approximate date range with nothing else. You may get hundreds(thousands) of possiblilites if your ancestor had a common name, but with what you know you may be able to filter it down and come up with a location. The USA does its census every 10 years in years ending with 0 and this site has through 1920 posted with some 1930 entries. It is a free site to use. Happy hunting.

You could also try the message boards on ancestry.com ... You could start a thread giving your ancestors name, D.O B , birthplace, arrival year ( if known ) and the name and info of any spouse and children ... this is free and I have had some success with this method ...
