How do I find an ancestor from somewhere in canada, who moved to ny, but changed his name once here, from Lemay/Lamay to May. All I know is he was a horse breeder/farmer and his land (family lore says it was a huge chunk of Quebec) was taken from him by orders from a queen. He is either the James J. May, 70, (wife Louisa, 60) or the John May 32, (wife Mary, 26) on the 1860 Allegan Co., Ganges Twp., Michigan census. James or John is the father of my GG-Grandpa named Francis (Frank) John May b. 12-4-1841, Rensselaer Co., Stephentown, NY. He married Margaret Landry, 11-11-1862 in Allegan Co., Ganges Twp., Michigan. Me and several family members have been at a brick wall for over a year now. No one is able to find out who Frank's parents are from canada. Please email me with any ideas!!! lisamarie51370@yahoo.com
