Mathew Pendergrass, b. abt. 1770, d. abt. 1840. John Eley b. 1803, Chatham, NC, married Martha Gregory. Gregory family was of German-Lutheran descent. John Eley Sr. (son of Mathew) was killed in May, 1863 by Confederate partisans for his loyalty to the Union side. John Eley Jr., son of John E. Sr., died Jan. 12, 1863 from wound at battle of Stones River/Murphreesboro, TN, leaving Martha a widow. Martha moved with Gregory family members to Stone Co., MO, abt. 1870.
