I am looking for John Watt born circa 1720 and died on an unknown date.
He came to Pennsylvania around 1759 from North Ireland but I have no sources with solid dates. His son Samuel was born circa 1759 and it is rumored he was born on the ship on the way over from Ireland, but I have no official sources that can confirm this information outside rumors via family histories. I have no other information on and do not know that name of his wife nor if he had other children, though I do see a William Watt pop up multiple times alongside Samuel in Revolutionary War muster rolls. I did find some other muster rolls from the Revolution for a John Watt who was also with the 5th Pennsylvania regiment and was killed during the battle of Monmouth per referencing unit involvment dates and the reported date of death on the muster rolls. If anyone else is tracking this information I would be very interested to compare notes.
With all this said, there has been alot of false information spread as well in regards to this particular ancestor and people trying to find out more information. The speculation that Johns wife's name was Mary Coddington is wrong and is derived from people linking incorrect documents to ancestry account trees without checking the dates (in the case of Mary Coddington they are 120 years too late). I am seeking out anyone with actual verified information on this person and his place of origin for further research (anyone mentioning Londonderry is also incorrect is they are tracking a different John Watt who landed in South Carolina). I have seen the prospect of county Tyrone thrown around a few times in different threads on numerous genealogy sites but no-one seems to know where this idea came from.
I've been running into alot of false and unverified information searching for John and I'm hoping someone out there has some information I havent tracked down yet. Additionally, a big thank you to anyone I have already reached out to during my search and thank you for anyone about to jump into the madness with me.
