On a related matter, can anyone shed light on whether members of the HIRSCH family changed their name to DEER "before or about" the time of Jacob's birth in 1747. Thanks so much..I know that is a lot of research but I dont know where else to look.

Hi, on Jacob there are plenty of family trees, but with no parents for him. Also very little about him, which is sad, as so many people have his tree. He & his wife have a family so I will put in what is here for them, hope they help.

Thanks Harry,it is because of the lack of background for Jacob that I now ponder whether he appeared on the scene as a result of a name change......perhaps Deere or O'deere from Ireland or to avoid a Jewish connection with the name Hirsch...( There is a much later instance of this but only one that I can find). It also whets my curiosity that there are no earlier records for his wife, Anne Davies. My grandfather jumped ship and changed his name.....his records took some finding...Perhaps Jacob was a fugitive from British justice and successfully lived a good life but his wife should have some pedigree...but thanks anyway Harry.

oops.....it would have had to be jacob's father who changed his name, if indeed that was what happened.....cheers

I believe that I am another of Jacob Deer's descendants with no record of his ancestors either.

Harry's notes above seem to have both 1737 and 1750 for Anna/Anne's birth year. 1750 seems more likely for the borth dates of her children. I also have acquired what seems to be a photo of a headstone with the text:
"IN MEMORY
of
ANN wife of JACOB DEER
of this Parish who died
August 15 1795 Aged 49 Years
Also the above JACOB DEER
who died January 8, 1822
Aged 85 Years.
This Grave is not to be opened
with out the consent of G. Deer.
......of Neath Abbey."
The photo was shared by Ian Newton and is named "cadoxton 012" which might give a clue to its location.

That seems to give a third variant spelling, and a birth year of around 1746.

Thanks Sbdavis.

I will send your info to a cousin near Wales (UK) and see if she can advance the mystery.Thanks.Bll

Thank you. I believe that I am descended from Jacob through:

  • Eynon Deer (1774-1850)
  • John Deer (1809-1853)
  • John Thomas Deer (1836-1909)

John Thomas migrated with his wife to Wallaroo in South Australia on the Morning Star in 1863, engaged as a copper smelter.

Hi,

does this mean you are in SA or OZ somewhere....I am in Qld.

cheers

Yes, I am in South Australia. JTD married, widowed, married again in Wallaroo. He moved to NSW for a while, owned a copper mine with his brother Eynon at Frogmore, where my great grandfather was born, then moved back to Wallaroo.
