Ernest had a daughter, also an artist, Ruth Amabel Spence (1893-1941). Ernest's brother Daniel (1855-1849) was married to the NY born artist Alice. Ernest was a very reputable artist, having exhibited at the Royal Academy of London at least nine times. The Spence's had an adoptive cousin in whom I am particularly interested, the artist Harriet Maynard (1849-1906), daughter of a slave and a cotton planter in Surinam, William Maynard.
