I need help to trace the father of David Stodart born around 1779, died 24-02-1840 age 61, he was a Surgical Instrument Maker

Journal by stods713

David Stodart b 1779, d 1840, married Jacobina (Anderson?). was a Surgical Instrument Maker & Cutler, premises 401 Strand London. He ran the business from around 1830's. Before that James Stodart FRSL ran the business from around 1794. After retiring James lived at 11 Russell Square, London. Then he moved back to Edinburgh, Scotland & lived at his uncle's house Robert Stodart (of the pianoforte makers), at 52 Queens Street, Edinburgh.

James has a plaque at the Old Calton Cemetery Edinburgh, another David Stodart is buried at the same site, this David was formerly from Tabago! James is buried at his uncle cemetery site elsewhere!

My line to David (of the Strand) is: David -M- Jacobina = 10 children, the 5th - Samuel born 1816 died 1904 a 88
Samuel -M- Mary Ann Perkins 1847? = 7 children, the 3rd - Hearne born 1865 died .
Hearne -M- Emily Blanchard = 5 children, the 4th - Frederick born 1917 died 1983 a 66.
Frederick -M- Vera Nicklin 1947 = 3 children the 2nd - Philip John Stodart born 1953.

So David is my G,G,Grandfather, James refers to a David in his will as a nephew, but I cannot prove the connection yet. Can anyone help with this?

Thanks Phil Stodart.

I can't answer your question about David, but I am very excited to find someone else researching the Stodarts! David 1779 was my GGGfather, then Charles 1822, then Frank Alfred 1886, then Frank Edward 1911 (my father).

What was the relationship of James FRSL to David (1779).

Hello Anne,

Thanks for your reply, I have obtained a copy of the Will of James Stodart whilst in Scotland. The Will refers to a David Stodart as a nephew, James Stodart died in Scotland at the house of his uncle Robert Stodart, the pianoforte maker. James Stodart lived at 11 Russel Square, London after leaving the business at 401 Strand, London. The business was continued by David Stodart until around 1839-40. I have also established that another uncle of James lived at the Russel Square address, he was William Stodart. At the moment I am in Australia, when I return I will update you on any other information I have. The Australian Maritime Museum have a David Stodart, Surgical Instrument case and set of instruments on display. Bye for now,

Phil Stodart.
