Im Trying to Find My Great Grandfather Albert Edward Howard Born 1883 Burra South Australia and His Descendants Before Him

By KristalMcGlew November 17, 2016 1334 views 19 comments

In 1915 He joined the Army in Geraldton Western Australia. The form said he came from the Kimberley before that and born in Burra, South Australia. His form also said his sister was Dora Baufield of Chappple St Broken Hill.
On my Nanas birth certificate it says he Married Ivy Myrtle Nissan, Nee Spencer, Nee Moffitt on 6th June 1926 in Perth.
I haven't been able to find anything on him other than my Nanas (Beryl Jean Howard) birth certificate and his Army records.
Would you possibly have any further information for me?

What an elusive family! I have searched and searched but like you, can find nothing, assuming of course he was telling the truth about his age .birth etc as can find no birth record for him either do you have his marriage cert,? Ivy died in 1934 is that correct?
if you have anything else that may help us would be good

KristalMcGlew

I cant tell you how grateful I am to you to look for him with me. THANK YOU!

He was born Burra South Australia in 1883.
His religion was Church of England
He did a cycle apprenticeship with ?? Doudall for 5yrs.
He has 3 tattoos. One said "Bert". One was a womans face and Hilda bay (what ever Hilda bay means?). One on his chest, I think a cross?
He was in the Kimberley and in 1915 signed up to the Army in1915 in Geraldton.
He was kicked off it seems in 1916.
He married Ivy Myrtle Nissen on 6th June 1926 in Perth (who also married previously Hayman and Moffatt) (Cant find married Cert)
They had Beryl Jean Howard on 20th October 1932 at Merriden Hospital (Beryl is my Nana who is still alive but knows nothing)
Ivy Myrtle 36yrs died 1934 and Beryl 2yrs was sent to an Orphanage. Ivy was buried in Nungarin Cemetery.

I have called the Burra History Centre and Nungara Library to see if they can find any further information also. They both said they that initial search shows nothing but they will get back to me in a few days.

Anything at all would be helpful. Again thank you for your kindness.

I live in the UK so not sure of distances. found this which might be her
Name: Ivy Myrtle Moffatt
Gender: Female
Electoral Year: 1925
Subdistrict: Subiaco
State: Western Australia
District: Perth
Country: Australia
she was living alone at 1 Austin Street

I am also wondering if the tattoos, Hilda May was a sweetheart of his and Bert was what he called himself?

tonkin

Elusive indeed.
My searches have also failed to locate a birth and marriage for Albert Edward HOWARD.
Same applies for his sister Dora.

There are several WW1 service records with the name of Albert Edward HOWARD. Are you sure the service record you have (number 4292) is the correct Albert?

I expect these are the two marriages for your Ivy Myrtle NISSEN.

1.
Groom: Spencer J HAYMAN.
Bride: Ivy M NISSEN.
Year married: 1919.
Place: Perth Western Australia.
Ref: Marriages, Western Australia. Reg. #160.

2.
Groom: John MOFFATT.
Bride: Ivy M HAYMAN.
Year married: 1922.
Place: Perth, Western Australia.
Ref: Marriages, Western Australia. Reg. #225.

If we can find some details on his supposed sister Dora
it may help to back track through the records.

Cheers for now.

Yes I was wondering the same thing Markav. Im guessing Bert would be his nickname. Thank you Tonkin yes that is my great grandmother. Luckily I have everything on her so her line goes back its just my Great Grandfather Albert Edward Howards' line that Im unable to find.
Yes the 4294 records have been the only records Ive been able to find on him. But they do give awesome leads, just everyone I follow up has been a dead end to me. (mind you Im still very new to searching)

Such an elusive fello.

markav

Do you know who registered Ivy's death?

KristalMcGlew

Wow Markav, that is such a good point! I dont see his name on her death certificate. Would a husbands name usually be on it or just the doctors/gov officals?
Very interesting developments...
My mum told me that Nana had police come out to her farm to tell her, her biological father (Albert Edward Howard) has passed away in Kalgoorlie and will she foot the bill?. Nana said no that she doesnt know him or seen him since been swnt to the orphanage and they said well he will die a pauper in that case. So there are electoral records of an Albert Edward Howard in Kalgoorlie 1949 a horsedriver. Could be him 50/50 chance. Lead has stopped there again.

KristalMcGlew

Sorry the police officers came out to her to announce death after Oct 1953 or in the year 1954

markav

I wonder how they found her (nana), there may still be a record of the visit. Haven't found any death record, surely someone would have registered his death, police maybe?

KristalMcGlew

Yes, how did they find him? Maybe he is on the adoption paperwork? Although I did read somewhere that fathers normally werent listed. Would love to get my hands on those documents. I thought well maybe I can find hospital records in 1952 1953 or 1954 with him in Kalgoorlie before his passing? Just dont know where to track them down. Any tips? Ill keep saying it = thank you

markav

I contacted Kalgoorlie History society re his burial, they contacted me today but found nothing. I am looking through police records (State Records Office of WA
Government of Western Australia, Department for Culture and the Arts). to see if his name pops up, no luck so far as a lot of their records you need to go and look at. I will try and email them to see if they can help as if the police were involved there would be a record of it somewhere.
Don't give up hope as I was looking for my great uncle and his family for 15 years
and a lovely person on this site looked for me and found them in Canada! so now I have photos of them and cousins.

KristalMcGlew

Call me emotional but your kindness has made me teary. You curtainly are paying it forward. Thank you so much for your efforts for me.

markav

KristalMcGlew

markav

Oh I am soo excited! Howard was not his real name I found him in the archives. Hope you are sitting down!!
His real name was Albert Edward Schmelzkopt every thing I found on this man matches with his police records Army Records and his sister who married a Banfield etc and a photo of him! sadly he was not a nice man.
YOU WILL BE BLOWN AWAY!
Just look him up on Ancestry and you will find it all. Enjoy!

janilye

Well done Markav,
The name should read Schmelzkopf
This prominant Adelaide family were sometimes published with the T on the end rather than the F.

He joined the 1st lighthorse brigade and was awarded the Military Medal.

SCHMELZKOPF, Edwin Leopold Edwin Leopold Schmelzkopf was born in Broken Hill the son of Isabel Jane SCHMELZKOPF.
