In the "Register of Lythe" it is said of the person that they are "Of followed by a letter of the Alphabet" eg. "of S" All my lot are said to be "of S". Can you tell me what the "S" stands for please.

Maybe the S stands for Scarborough which is the Disrict name ... just a thought ..

Thank you for your response.
Lythe is about 10 miles north of Whitby. They appear to have lived in Lythe and I understand Scarborough would be south of Whitby so as this is the Lythe Register I hesitate to consider Scarborough. Certainly I could be wrong, I never discount anything.

Hi Lyn. "S" is for Sandsend. See the full index at http://search.ancestry.co.uk/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=8020&iid=Lythe-1634-1768-0172
