I wish you success in you research, the name popped out because KNAPP is in my wifes family tree. His name was Zadok Knapp JUDD. Maybe you and she are in the same line.
Have you tried using Ancestry.com? I just typed in the name and had a lot on Jacob W Knapp. I think they re-used family names over and over. I found a Jacob whose father was George. He had a brother Jacob and George's father was Jacob. Try it, you may just find the right one.
Several lived in Illinois, having been born in Ohio, New York, Massachusetts and Germany and or England.. My 9th great grandfather was Nicholas Knapp who came from England in 1630.

I have a whole line of Knapp family members back to and before Peter Knapp 1777-1851 who was born in Rehweiler, Kusel, Rheinland-Phalz, Germany, and on July 13, 1842 emigrated through New York City and traveling to Neustadt, Grey County, Ontario. My paternal Grandmother was descended from Peter. My Knapp family is a large one, and married into families such as Knechtel and Bechtel, both of which had connections into Pennsylvania and New York State. It is also possible that some relatives lived in Ohio or Michigan. If any of these suggestions sound promising let me know.
