James McPHERSON and Jane ROBERTSON

Wanted : Birth records and parents of this couple. Scotlands People has been searched. T

The records I have so far consist of their marriage record, some emigration documentation and their death certificates. It appears that they did not make wills.

Marriage: James McPherson and Jane Robertson were married on 22 November 1840 in Blairgowrie. In the register, no parents’ names were given; the only remark was “in this parish”.

Emigration: On 7 December 1840 they applied for a free passage to New Zealand and on 5 February 1841 they departed from Gravesend on the ship 'Katherine Stewart Forbes', arriving in New Zealand on 11 June 1841. (Thus they were not included in the 1841 census.)

The emigration information originates from Colonial Office papers relating to the New Zealand (Land) Company. James’ and Jane’s ages are given as 27 and 22 and James is a wright. I did not find a name of a previous employer.

On 10 September 1841 the birth was registered at Port Nicholson, NZ, of Helen, daughter of James McPherson, carpenter and Jane McPherson, maiden surname Robertson. On the reverse of the certificate are the words
PARENTS / Late of Blairgowrie Perthshire / [witnesses:] Dr Fitzgerald and Ann Robertson.

Move to Tasmania: The Archives Office of Tasmania Free Arrivals Index lists the arrival at Hobart Tasmania of the ship 'Adelaide' from Port Nelson NZ on 16 January 1843. There are two identical index cards recording the arrival of steerage passengers “McPherson with wife and child”.

Subsequent children born in Hobart were James (1845), Margaret (1846), and Jane (1848). These details come from microfilms of the Tasmanian registers.

At some point, probably circa 1848, the family moved to Melbourne, Victoria. Children born in Melbourne were John Walter (1850?) Sarah Ann (1851?), and Charles Robertson (1852?). Their last child, Jessie, was born on 1 March 1854 (there is a certificate for this birth).

Death: The death certificates for James and Jane yield the following information:

James died in Flemington (Melbourne) on 20 June 1892 of old age and heart disease, aged 80 years. His occupation was given as carpenter. His father was stated to be William McPherson, a carpenter and his mother was Helen McPherson, maiden surname unknown. His birthplace and place of marriage is given as Blairgowrie. The informant was his eldest daughter, Helen Mutimer.

Jane died in Ascot Vale (Melbourne) on 20 September 1906 from old age and heart disease, aged 86 years. Her father was James Robertson, occupation unknown and her mother was Jean Robertson, maiden surname unknown. Her birthplace and place of marriage is given as Fifeshire. The informant was Charles Chatterton, her son-in-law.

(The correctness of their parents' names has, of course, been queried.)
