James Torpey B 1844 Ireland to Philadelphia C 1868 1870
Need info on my great-grandfather, James A. Torpey. Cannot find ship information, nor listing of brothers with whom he arrived in the US from Ireland between 1868 and 1870. Once in Philadelphia, he married Cathrine (Kate) Hickey. They had daughter Alice b. 1872; Mary b, 1877; son James b. 1879; son William b. 1882; son Morris or Maurice (my grandfather) b. 1885; son Frank (Francis) b. 1887 and daughter Margaret b. 1890.
Any help with family in Ireland, arrival, naturalization, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I've been working on this for nearly 30 years.
Mark, I would like to share my Torpy/Torpey PA info with you. Also if youhave found any new info. would also be appreciated.
I have a brick wall as well Ellen Torpy b- abt 1838/40 Ire, had a child" Mary Roosa Mason" b- 1858 with Charles Mason b- abt 1835/40 Eng, or Ire. Charles Mason was married at the time to Ellen Griffin. They were in Bradford co PA 1870 census. Never could find them prior, or ast. 1870. One of the 1/2 sisters of Mary Roosa Mason was b- abt 1856 Allegheny co PA" Katherine Mason.
This family moved to Tioga co, PA 1870-1875, by 1880 census husband Charles Mason had left wife Ellen Griffin Mason with 4 children.
In Tioga co, PA there were numerous TORPY/TORPEY families. I am still having a problem to the correct TORPY/TOORPEY family in Tioga co, PA. This line also links to TORPY/TORPEY in Steuben co, NY, and possibly Wyoming co, NY
Here are few of the links to Griffin in Tioga co, PA,& Torpy.
Kelly, Simmons, Reed, Herrington, Boyden, Colvin(Canada), Welch (NYC.KS), Mitchell(W.VA) Kane, Lennon, Horton.
The name Kushner & Platigorsky are not familiar to me; however I seem to recall a Hickey in Steuben co, NY? have to look back at my notes.
Thanks for the info. The names are familiar. I have done some DNA testing through ancestry.com and 23 and Me which led me to distant cousins in Ireland and also some relatives that immigrated to the Boston area where there is also a large contingent of Torpeys. The spelling with and without the e does appear in the family tree. If you can access ancestry.com or MyHeritage, let me know and I can request that you have access to the tree. Personally, I don't know of any relatives in the Bradford/Tioga area of PA. I suspect that the majority of the Torpey clan came from the Waterford area where there seems to be some closeness to the Hickey family. My personal email address is marktorpey@q.com. Please send me yours and I will forward an invite to view my ancestry.com tree. I will also ask a distant cousin in Ireland to send an invite to her extensive MyHeritage.com tree which might shed some light on your mystery.
