Jansen Denmark New Zealand

I have been trying to find some more info on an ancestor of mine named Niels Christian JANSEN (1833-1904). I have been told that he was working on a ship which stopped at New Zealand and he jumped ship, therefore I cannot find any passenger records of his. I have also been told he originated from Denmark. I think he may have married a Matilda Sophia (Surname Unknown) or a Sophie Martha (Surname Unknown) (1832-1920). In 1879, they had a son named Neil JANSEN who later married an Ethel BROWN. If anyone has come across ANY information on this individual (Niels Christian JANSEN) or this family could you please contact me with some info. It will be much appreciated. Thankyou.
