John and Mary Pringle Otago New Zealand

Journal by AuntieLila

Recently I was randomly searching my family history. A hobby for 20+ years.

I was stunned to discover on this site, 2 Uncles and 1 Aunt on the PRINGLE side that I had never heard of!
The dates, names and location made total sense. But after the initial excitement I checked further and discovered it was not correct.
Who knew there could be two couples named John and Mary PRINGLE living in South Otago/Southland area around the same time! But there were.

John and Mary PRINGLE of Teviot had three children - recorded in Teviot Parish Baptisms, Parish Code 23/6 on Papers Past

George Henry 1903
John Leslie 1905
Elsie Madeline 1907

They are NOT the children of John and Mary Elizabeth Ann(ie) PRINGLE of Balfour, Southland

I would really appreciate if this incorrect information could be amended.

I don't know how to go about it.

I've found Francis Pringle marrying Mary Elizabeth Ann Orr in 1904 and Francis Pringle marrying Mary Hennessy in 1916

An Irene Reta Pringle was born in 1908 and an Ella Frances Pringle was born in 1916 to Francis & Mary Elizabeth Ann Pringle

There was an Audrey Scott Pringle born in 1900 to a Francis & Mary Pringle as were the 3 you listed above

Thank you so much for getting back to me.
I'm a granddaughter of Francis and Mary Elizabeth Ann (sometimes Annie) Pringle.

Francis was born in Moneymore South Otago and bought a farm at Balfour, Southland around 1900. He lived there all his life, marrying Mary E A from Tapanui, in 1904 - see info above.

I never knew him, he died a month after I was born in 1948. Dad (Leslie) took over the Balfour farm as the only son. Mary moved to Gore and lived there the rest of her life.

Irene Reta married and lived on the farm next door to us. Ella Frances married and lived most her life in Gore. All now deceased.

So it was a huge surprise when I discovered the 3 extra siblings! The birth dates slotted in so well. But the only way it worked was if they had all died in infancy. Non of my still living cousins or sisters had ever heard of them.

I began doing a little research over time, and discovered the Mary and Francis Pringle who married in 1896 in Teviot - now known as Roxburgh.

And the baptismal records for 3 children, George Henry, John Leslie and Elsie Madeline are found in Teviot Parish Baptisms 1868 - 1920 Parish code 23/6

The clincher though was in the 1928 Dunedin Electoral roll
- three people living at 34 Fingal Street -

50161 Pringle, Elsie Madeline Spinster
50162 Pringle, George Henry Electrician
44205 Pringle, Mary, married

That confirmed for me that there had been two Francis and Mary Pringle families of three children, around the same time and not too far apart!

I would really appreciate the records being corrected.

Forgot to add my apologies again for the name confusion, John Pringle was Francis Pringle's father.

sorting out the 2 Francis & Mary Pringle and leaving here for reference.
#1 & #3 was the same Francis remarried, (Francis Pringle & Mary Falconer separated in 1913)

1 Francis Pringle (1869-1939) was born at Miller's Flat (his parents were Francis Pringle & Eliza Scott). He married Mary Falconer (1868-1945) of Waitahuna in 1896.
Had 5 children
1898 - 1987 Lynda Mary Pringle
1900 - 1993 Audrey Scott Pringle
1903 - 1961 George Henry Pringle
1906 - 1986 John Leslie Pringle
1907 - Elsie Madeline Pringle

2 Francis 'Frank' Pringle (1871-1948) was born in Tokomariro (his parents were John Pringle & Jane Thornton). He married Mary Elizabeth Ann Orr (1883-1959) of Tapanui in 1904
Had 3 children
1908 - 1991 Irene Reta Pringle
1916 - 2007 Ella Frances Pringle
1918 - 1991 Leslie Alfred Pringle
Francis died 21 Sep 1948 and buried in Gore

3 Francis Pringle married Mary Hennessy in 1916. In 1919 he asked the Dunedin City Police Court for a reduction of an order of 30s a week ($109 today) made against him 6½ years previously to support his (first) wife & 5 children (it was refused, his wife giving evidence that 3 of her children were all invalids requiring medical attention). In 1922 he was in Dunedin Court again and was sentenced to 14 days gaol for being £5 in arrears. In 1929 he was now £41 18s in arrears and sentenced to 1 months gaol, suspended so long as he paid the current order of 30s a week and 5s a week off the arrears. 6 months later this was increased to 15s a week. Francis died 25 April 1939 and buried in Waitati

Thank you so much for correcting the information! And so promptly. Being on holiday at the moment I really wanted to get it cleared up if possible.

The other Francis Pringle sounds interesting! Almost a soap opera script in the making.

I started researching my family history many years ago to trace back each branch to the country of origin. Now completed. Confirmed mainly from Scotland, with a smattering of English and a couple of pinches of Irish, with some interesting stories along the way!

Not so active now, until the surprise family turned up.

Again thank you so much for your help. Really gratefully appreciated.
