John ELLIS ANDERSON, b1835, Warrington, CHS

Query by motherbear

In his Will of 1898, my 2x gr-grandfather Hiram ANDERSON in Tranmere, CHS acknowledged his illegitimate son John Ellis, then trading as a bookseller in Birkenhead, CHS under the name of John Ellis Anderson. John was bapt 27 Dec 1835 at St Elphins, Warrington, CHS, with Mary ELLIS named as the mother; Hiram ANDERSON was named on the entry as the father. I'm sure Hiram was married to Alice ?? at the time as their son William ANDERSON was bapt 30 Jan 1835 at St Peters, Liverpool.

As an adult John seems to have used the names John ELLIS, John ANDERSON, John Ellis ANDERSON, and John Anderson ELLIS interchangeably. He married Mary ?? about 1856, and they had at least 7 children. From 1881 …the earliest census I've found them in… they were living in the Birkenhead/Wirral area. John was then a mariner, a lighterman in 1891, and general secretary of the Mersey Flatmens Assoc in 1901.

John's wife Mary ?? was born abt 1835 in 'Hadock' ?Haydock?, LAN, and died in 1887 in Tranmere; John died on 23 Dec 1923 in Birkenhead. From at least 1881, several generations of the family lived at 352 Beckwith St, Claughton with Grange, CHS.

Although I've been tracing this family for about a decade, living in New Zealand puts limitations on the information that can be accessed!

Is anyone else researching this family, or could someone please help me with these people? I'm happy to exchange any further details on this or any other families I've been working on, or could do research in New Zealand in exchange if people would prefer.

Thanks for reading this request.

Are John Thomas Anderson and your John Ellis Anderson the same person? He appears here to have left his money to Hiram Anderson estate-agent and John Thomas Anderson general-contractor

England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966 for Hiram Anderson

Thanks for your replies, but I have all this information.
Both the executors of Hiram Snr's estate were his grandsons, Hiram Anderson, estate agent, and his brother John Thomas Anderson, general contractor – they're the Hiram aged 7 and the John T aged 5 in the census shown above.

Although Hiram Snr's marriage to Rachel DAVIES, my 2xgr-grandmother, may be Hiram's first under Civil Registration, it seems that this was NOT his first marriage as I recently found a baptism at St Peters, Liverpool:
"William, son of Hiram and Alice ANDERSON, Charters Street, flatman, baptised 30 Jan 1835"
… presumably Charters Street will be a Liverpool address??

Lancs OPR records the same entry as "William Anderson - [Child] of Hiram Anderson & Alice"

As there's no indication on either of these entries that William is illegitimate, I can only assume Hiram married Alice ?? somewhere, sometime before 30 Jan 1835! Sigh …more loose ends to tie up!!!

Thanks for your interest and your help!

Pumpfields Rd and Carruthers St shown on the L11 map are still there according to todays map, Charters Street must have been removed when they built Kingsway Mersey Tunnel.
