John Joseph Devine Buried at the Melbourne General Cemetery Victoria Australia

John and William Devine were early settlers at Point Nepean, and Thomas, their brother died there in 1853. I am currently detailing the children of John and William (many of whom are buried at the Melbourne General Cemetery) in my journal:
GEORGE BAKER AND HIS DEVINE FIRST WIFE

THIS IS JOHN JOSEPH DEVINE'S CEMETERY RECORD.

I was going to add the following details on the cemetery page but this would probably mean having to remember yet another password (which I would forget!)

DEVINE."”On the 9th December, 1913, at the residence of his niece, "Walworth," Valetta street, Malvern, John Joseph Devine, eldest son of the late William Devine, lime merchant, Melbourne, aged 73 years (Interred privately, Melbourne General Cemetery.)

No birth record was found for John on Victorian BDM, which probably indicates that he was born in Ireland.

FROM MY JOURNAL "GEORGE BAKER, LIME MERCHANT INVOLVED NEAR PORT PHILLIP HEADS AND HIS DEVINE FIRST WIFE, VIC., AUST."
My apologies for any repetition and a rather higgledy-piggledy lay-out of the information caused by three different sources providing breakthoughs, namely Victorian BDM, cemetery records and family notices on trove.I hope I have made it clear that Captain Thomas Devine was buried in the stated plot because he was the husband of Amelia Agnes. Which reminds me that I didn't reveal the names of his parents, so I'll do that first. There didn't seem to have been a death notice but at least it is confirmed that the cemetery record is correct regarding his name.

CAPTAIN THOMAS DEVINE.
THE FRIENDS of the late Captain THOMAS DEVINE (of the barque Joannie Oswald) are respectfully Invited to FOLLOW his REMAINS to the place of interment, the Melbourne General Cemetery. The funeral will move from his late residence, 28 Peel-street, Hotham. on Friday, at one o'clock p.m.(P.3, The Herald, 23-12-1869.)

THE DEVINES
Some information about the Devines has been published in comments.
Victorian BDM shows that both John and William Devine were living at Point Nepean where some of their children's births took place and the maiden names of their wives are given consistently but my main aim at the moment is to find where they afterwards lived so I can find the death records of John, William and their wives. Here's a good start.

JOHN DEVINE'S FAMILY.
DEVINE."”The Friends of the late Miss SARAH DEVINE of Bendigo, daughter of the late John Devine (formerly lime merchant, of this city), are informed that her remains will be interred in the Melbourne General Cemetery. The funeral will leave the Spencer-street railway station on arrival of train from Bendigo THIS MORNING, 5th inst., at 9.50. (P.1, Argus, 5-3-1894.)

(Could be John, born in 1847 as his death record (1898 reg. no.17112)gives his age as 51 but his mother was supposedly Mary unknown.Given that he was buried in the same plot, I believe the mother's name was a mistake.)

There were no family notices regarding him but he was supposed to be a former Bendigo resident.
Suddenly."”A man named John Devine, aged 51, said to be an ex-resident of Bendigo, died very suddenly on Saturday at the residence of his brother-in-law, No. 65 Simpson street, East Melbourne. The deceased had been
in ill-health for the last two months, and came to the above address about a fortnight ago. He was not seen by a medical man, and while drinking some wine he suddenly fell back and expired. Dr. T. Boyd was called in, but found that life was extinct. The doctor declined to give a certificate as to the cause of death, and the police were communicated with. A constable removed the body to the city morgue.(P.2, Bendigo Advertiser, 3-10-1898.) No coroner's inquest has been found.

As Thomas clearly died at Point Nepean this death record is a perfect example of the fact that the place of death (or birth) in records was where the event was REGISTERED.

The reason that no death record had been found is that William died in Brisbane.

THE DEVINES.
There are maps on pages 56 and 57 of C.N.Hollinshed's LIME LAND LEISURE showing "10.Devine Huts" at the south east corner of Pt Nepean Rd and Hemston Avenue (bottom right corner of Melway 156J3) and "15. Devine Bros." at White Cliff (just on the east side of White Cliff, Melway 168 D3.) I had always assumed that the lime kiln standing at that spot was a wholly created replica but it seems possible that the old Devine kiln may have just been tidied up by the removal of many decades of rubbish and maybe the lining of the kiln with bricks. A member of the Rye Rotary and Lions Clubs might be able to shed light on what work was required to create in 1989 what we see today.
https://poi-australia.com.au/points-of-interest/australia/victoria/rye/lime-kiln-rye-foreshore-opposite-2543-point-nepean-rd-rye-mornington-peninsula-vic/
EXTRACT. Set just behind the sand dunes at the base of Whitecliffs Lookout, a replica Lime Kiln has been built by the Rotary & Lions Clubs of Rye in 1989. It has been sited where once the historic "˜Devine Kiln' stood, as well as an old loading point where bullock teams would drag wagons loaded with bagged lime into the shallow waters, transfer it to barges, then to small sailing ships, to be transported to a special Limecraft Dock which was constructed c 1849, near King Street in Melbourne.

John and William Devine held separate leases in 1852, probably near the huts. These are plotted on another map in LAND LIME LEISURE.

https://nepeanhistoricalsociety.asn.au/history/quarantine-station/quarantine-background/
"In October 1852 Lieutenant-Governor La Trobe wrote to the General Surveyor Robert Hoddle enquiring as to the date of the expiration of the inhabitant's leases. He was duly informed that the leases were renewed annually and were set to expire at the end of the year.

In Reply came the following nominal roll from Hoddle on 27th October, 1852:

Name Rent
Daniel Sullivan £12
Robert White £12
William Devine £12
John Devine £12
James Ford £12
H. G. Cameron £12

La Trobe's response was to direct the Harbour Master to:

Take such steps as may be found desirable in withdrawing from licenced occupation such portion of land as may be required for the purpose of the immediate formation of a quarantine station at the Heads.13"

by itellya on 2018-07-29 02:08:01
Silly me! It's some years since I inspected the replica lime kiln but I'd only needed to look at the photo to see that the kiln was lined, not with bricks, but with limestone rubble (which was in such plentiful supply that it was used for some time to make the often-mentioned WHITE ROADS which were very smooth but caused glare, were slippery at times and could deteriorate quickly once the process started.)
