John REED, born abt 1773 in Ireland, 1850 in Harrison County Ohio, where did he come from and where did he go???

Query by pdtim

My Gr,Gr,Gr Grandfather, John REED was born in Ireland about 1773. I have him in Harrison County Ohio in 1820,1830,1840 and in 1850. In the 1850 Ohio cencus, Rumley TWP., Harrison County. He is 77 years old, born Ireland, his wife Margaret is 54, born Ireland, son George W 24, born Ohio. This is the last that I can find John. I have no idea where he was before Ohio. Dead end.

I can find a Margaret REED in New Jefferson Twp. Harrison County Ohio, age 63 born in Ireland (abt 1797)
a Clarissa M Miller age 40 is living with her. This might be my Margaret REED. When I was in Harrison County Ohio I did find a grave in the New Germano Cemetery with a headstone: Margaret Milligan REID, Died Dec 21, 1866, aged 76Y. 11M. 21D. That would mean she was born roughly 1790. I can find no other Margaret REED in the later census. I have not been able to prove this one way or another. Notice that the last name is also spelled REID.

George Washington REED went to Whiteside County Ohio where he married Rachael Ann Gibler on 28 Jan 1851. They lived there about 10 years. They had the following children: Christian Gibler REID (1851-1926), William Cook REID (1855-1933), John Cartwright REID (1857-1935), Isaac Nebbit REID (1860-1940),and John Thomas REID (1862-1941). As of 1880 the family was living in Gage County Nebraska.

I am descended from John REED, George W REID, John Cartwright REID, Henry Guy REID to Harold Gene REID.

In some notes in paper work fromr my Uncle Bob, on the SNOW side of the family I found the following notes from my Grandmother:

Grandad: John Cartwright
Great G Dad: George Washington
Great Great G Dad: John
Children: William, Henry and Hugh from 1st wife. Nancy Thompson Grand daughter.
1 Girl, 2 Girl from 2nd wife Ella then Daughter Ella REID cook
3 Children: 3rd wife

Since I have not found anything about John REED before 1820, I can't prove this. I am assuming that John Cartwright REID's brother William COOK REID, might have been named after his fathers mothers maiden name of COOK, that would tie into ELLA COOK as the second wife. William's older brother Christian was named after his mothers maiden name Gibler. Does anyone recognize any of the names of John REED's children or wives? I have been at this brick wall for about 10 years! I did just recently send in for a DNA test on my father, so when it comes back I may have more information. Meanwhile can anyone help?

I have the following in a very large file from a cousin of my (now deceased) mother. I do not know how accurate it is, or if it is the same John Reed.

Birth: 1773, Tyrone, Armagh Co., Ulster, North Ireland
Death: 1863, Logansport, Cass Co., Indiana

Wife: Elizabeth Cain

John Reed emigrated from Ireland in 1796 and located near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He moved to Cincinnati, Ohio and began making the first molded brick ever manufactured there. It was his trade. There was only 1 brick building in Cincinnati at that time and it was built of old-fashioned "slap brick". He married there and his wife died there. In 1815 he moved to Fayette county Indiana, locating near Connersville.

I read this in May, but an just getting back to you. It sounds interesting, and could be possible. If your John moved to Harrison Cty Ohio after his wife died. His son George W married Rachel Ann Gibler in Whiteside Ill and lived there abuot 10 years before moving to Nebraska. George was born 25 July 1826 in Harrison Ohio. Interesting that Harrison Ohio is written on the 1850 census. John and Margaret both in Ireland. I have no idea when he came to the US or where he was before this. I am pretty sure he was there in 1840 with a son and daughter. Do you know if he had any other wives?

I am certainly going to work on this option! If you run across anything else, please let me know.
