Hi Tonkin, Harold Detlef Kahland served in the AIF in the First World War and reached the rank of Sergeant. He was killed in Belgium near Zonnebeke on the 4th October 1917. Details are on the War Memorial site.After he died his wife remarried circa 1921 a Don Allen.Before he died He and Ellen had a son John B Kahland.

Johann Kahland was a wine merchant and vigneron who operated Kahlands Wine Merchants in King Street Bendigo. He did not grow many grapes but sourced them from a variety of vineyards surrounding Sandhurst (Bendigo). His Cellars were extensive, described as 100 to 110 feet long, he exported a variety of wines to India.He was Hon Secretary of the Bendigo Wine And Fruit Growers Association.

There was a Joh Dett KAHLAND arrived in Victoria on the "Wilhelmsburg" in August 1853 and I expect this will be the Johanna KAHLAND you mean. He was the only passenger recorded under the name KAHLAND.
