edmondsallan - Good morning - In 1807 at a marae at " Waiomio " Bay Of Islands a new born baby was heard to cry out from outside his mother's womb. " Kawa " wife of the great chief " Te Ruki Kawiti " had given birth to a third child , a son to her husband . At birth they named this son "Te Kuhanga "
On the 27th Dec 1840 at Waimate North he was baptised with a different name . a name he would be known by there after . That english name was " Marsh Brown " ( Maihi Paraone ). after his fathers death in 1854 , and as his older brother " Taura " had been killed in battle , and although their were a few more of high descent ., he took over the leadership and was never questioned .
" Maihi " married three ( 3 ) times
v
1st marriage - " Huingariri " ( nga puhi )
v

v
2nd marriage " Tere " ( Wanganui region )
v

By marrying into the " Waikato " leaders he was offered by the great " Waikato Chief & King " - " Potatau Te Wherowhero " the Govenorship of the North .A position only second to the " Maori King "
In Jan 1862 , a hui was held at Kawakawa , for Nga Puhi to appoint " Maihi " as chief . this did not happen. " Maihi " in reply to this knock back, he created a Boundary division known as " Te Rohe 0 Ngati Hine between the lands of Nga Hine & Nga Puhi . They became known as the " Motatau Block " This maori chief did many things in his life time for his people and also assisted many europeans to settle on his lands . They are all well documentated in detail .
In 1889 " Maihi " fell victim to a Typhoid epidemic . He died on the 21st of May 1889 at Waiomio . " Maihi " wished for a christian burial was granted and he was first buried in a new burial ground called "Waiere " His body at a later date was reinterred in the
