Kenealy DE Smidt South Africa
The de Smidt's of South Africa arrived in 1781 when Abraham, mate of the VOC ship Middelburg, blew her up in Saldahna Bay to escape capture by the British. He managed to get to shore with his possessions, which were of considerable value. He soon became an important citizen and fathered an number of children.
The Kenealy's came much later. Charlemagne, my Grandfather, came as a magistrate in the colonial service. South Africa (SA) was then a British colony, having been conquered from the Dutch. Hi wife, Emily Johnson Joseph was born in SA, and had gone with her family to London, her father's birthplace. She met and married Charlemagne there and presumably influenced his decision to move to SA. They had 4 children, my father, Maurice Edward (Patrick) who went to Kenya, Eileen and Kathleen.
