Here is some info that my Canadian cousins have put together about the Descendants of Pierre Leclair. My cousins and I are descendants of Thomas and Jane (kemp) Leclair. Thomas was from Rustico. Jane was from Liverpool England. Their descendants are scattered throughout Canada and the United States.




Here is some of the information that I have on the family history related to Thomas Leclair and Jane Kemp. Sorry for taking so long to get back to you on this but work has kept me very busy lately. Some of what I have written you may already know but I thought you might be interested in how I went about putting this together.

As I mentioned in my earlier e-mail I too had trouble making the link from Thomas to the other LeClairs that lived in PEI. The link is important because, as you may know, the parish at Rustico published a history in 1938 (Blanchard’s) that provides, from their records, the history of many Acadians of PEI.

In this history it says that all the LeClairs on PEI are decendents of Pierre Leclair, who was in Rustico in 1798, and his wife Rose Belliveau. More on him later, but there are five children and the trick was to link Thomas Leclair to one of these children.

I have a couple of bits of information that helped me establish the most likely link. The obituary for my grandfather, Joseph Leclair, says that he was born in Bloomfield in 1890 to Mr and Mrs Thomas Leclair. The fact that Thomas Leclair lived in Bloomfield, PEI, was the most important information. I am not sure if you were aware of this. I note that in the obituary for Thomas Leclair there is no mention of Bloomfield.

The link to Bloomfield is important because it provides a link back to Pierre Leclair and Rose Beliveau of Rustico. They had a child, actually many as was the usual story, but the one that is most important for this story is Joseph (who married Helene Gauthier). They intern had a son named Amand. Amand married Seraphine Gallant. Amand and Saraphine are Thomas’s father and mother.

A couple of things might make you question whether I am sure of this. I certainly was not sure at first. First the obituary for Thomas Leclair says that his parents were Emmanuel and Irma Leclair (not Amand and Seraphine). The second is that if you look at the history of the Rustico parish there is no Thomas Leclair as a child to Amand and Seraphine. The Rustico parish history lists eight children born in Rustico (I’ll give you their names soon) and then says others born in Bloomfield. But I knew that Thomas was not one of the others born in Bloomfield since his obituary says that he was born in Rustico.

For me it was easy to guess that Thomas is in fact one of the eight children listed as being born in Rustico to Amand and Seraphine. In fact it was easy for me to guess that Thomas Leclair is actually Theophile Leclair. It was easy since my father’s name was John Francis Theophile Leclair (the Francis is from my grandmother’s side). But in the genealogy game guessing is not good enough.

A good clue to this is that Thomas’s obituary says that he is survived by three sisters and two brothers. The sisters are Mary (Pineau), Charlotte (King), and Minnie (Peters). The two brothers are Jerome and Joseph. The parish records from Rustico list the eight children of Arman and Seraphine as Theophile, Stanislau, Urbain, Urbain, Benoit, Jerome, Benoit, and Joseph (as well as others born in Bloomfield). So Theophile Leclair had brothers Jerome and Joseph. The same names as that of the brothers of Thomas. But this does not make Thomas and Theophile the same person since the same names get repeated in Acadian history.

What does make them the same person are records from the 1891 Census. My grandfather was born in Bloomfield in 1890 so I knew to look in the Census records for Lot 5 in PEI (this is where Bloomfield is located). The following family is recorded as residing in Lot 5 in 1891

For me Jane being from England and Joseph E (who is my grandfather – the e stands for Emmanual - being 2 years old was enough proof that Theophilus is Thomas.

I also have another piece of information, that I received a few years after I started this search, to confirm that Theophile and Thomas are one in the same. My grandmother, Joseph’s wife, was Margaret Keizer. But before he married Margaret he was married to someone else. That marriage was to Irene F Anderson. I have a document that was an exhibit in what I believe is either a divorce or an annulment to Irene. It is a certificate of baptism by a priest named A. E. Burke that he did so baptise Joseph Manual born on the 27th of July, 1889, to Theophile Leclair and Jane Kemp.

The next step in the process was to confirm that Thoephile (Thomas) that married Jane Kemp is the same Theophile that is listed at the son of Amand Leclair and Seraphine Gallant. The presence of Jerome and Joseph as brothers to Theophile and as sons to Amand and Seraphine is probably enough but I am always cautious about using the same information to confirm to related issues. As crime dramas like to remind us there is a need for corroborating evidence. For this I went to the census again.

The same 1891 census that lists Theophile and Jane living in lot 5 also has Arman Leclair and Seraphine Leclair living in Lot 5. The census lists Arman and Seraphine with having 5 children ranging from ages of 14 to 24 living in the house. It is realistic to assume that Theophile, who was 32 at the time of the census had set up his own household quite close to his mother and father. This was often the case at that time. More importantly are the children that are listed as the sons and daughters of Arman and Seraphine.

Once again we see the brother Jerome and Joseph, but more importantly we also see two of the surviving sisters listed in the obituary for Thomas Leclair – Charlotte and Minnie (Monique probably).

So yes I am sure that Arman Leclair is Theophile’s (Thomas’s) Father and my (and yours) great great grandfather. And for your information Amand and Seraphine (nee Gallant) were married on 18 November 1856 in the Rustico Parish. Witnesses were leon LeClerc and Judith Gallant.

In your e-mail you wonder about Lemang and Sarah Leclair being Thomas’s parents. Without knowing your source I cannot confirm this but obviously from the information above it is a good bet. Other information I have also indicates that Lemang may be Arman. I have seen the baptism records for the eight children listed in the Blanchard’s Rustico (the Rustico parish document). In these records Arman is listed variously as Lament and Amant. Also the Illustrated Historical Atlas of Prince Edward Island for 1880 shows L’Aiment Leclair with a plot of land in Lot 5.

Hope you find all this as interesting as it was for me to look for it. One final note to take us back to where I started. Pierre Leclair, from which all LeClairs in the Rustico parish came from. He was born in 1748 in a place near St. Malo France. And if you are a hockey fan I can tell you that you are a distant cousin of Jean Beliveau. A bit more about Pierre Leclair and the link to Jean Beliveau at a later date.

I have other dates and information that I gathered through a search that included time spent running around PEI copying out records. I will send some pictures, including one of a Gallant from Tignish, PEI, that is the spitting image of Thomas Leclair (He has to be a very close relative) and some documents that I have scanned in.

All I can offer is that my paternal Grandmother was Eugenie Leclerc. I have an id badge from a tricentennial family reunion {1662 -1962} back in 1962 { I was 2} in Quebec I believe. My father was a representative for my Grandmother @ the reunion. His name is Roland A.J. Gagne.

Hello! Don't know if anyone still checks this thread, but here I am writing anyway. My great grandmother was Gertrude LeClair, from Lot 23 Queens County PEI. On censuses her parents were listed at Joseph LeClair and Veronica Martin, but they were actually her grandparents. They raised her, because their eldest daughter had Gertrude out of wedlock in 1908/9. I discovered all of this while doing research for my grandmother (her mother was Gertrude). I would love to know if anyone knows anything about this family in particular, that I don't already know. Thanks.
