MIGHT this be the father of Emma Ann CREEKS, nee NORRIS FOUND DEAD. Richard Thomas Butler Norris, an old identity of the port, was found dead in his cottage at Ripon Street yesterday morning by his grandson. Mr Norris, who resided by himself, was 92 years of age. An inquest was held yesterday afternoon before Mr H. W. Bishop Coroner, who returned a verdict that death was due to heart failure, due to old age OBITUARY. SUN, VOLUME II, ISSUE 569, 6 DECEMBER 1915 RICHARD NORRIS. The death took place at Lyttelton yesterday morning of Mr Richard Thomas Butler Norris, one of the oldest residents of the port, at the advanced age of 92 years. Deceased, who was a native of Deal, arrived in Lyttelton in 1862 in the ship Mystery, and was one of the, original "Deal boatmen" sent out to Lyttelton. After residing in the port for some time he went for a trip Home, sailing in the Mystery, in 1863, and upon his return he served in various vessels on the coast, until when he went Home for another trip in the ship Stirlingshire. He worked in the same capacity as formerly on his return, until some years ago, when, owing to old age, he had to relinquish duty. Deceased leaves a family of five daughters and two sons. Thirty-four grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren are numbered among his descendants. Another of the original Deal boatmen is Mr John Newton, who is still residing at the port. The Deal Boatmen
I checked the family tree of Mr Norris but his daughters do not have the same name as my Great Grandmother.Although his wife did. My great gran Mother lived to the end of her days as a Creeks so that also ruled out raising another brood of young ones as well. It looked like the Mr Norris who was my Great Grandmothers Father was an Engineer but looked like he was concurrently in Wellington at the same time era.
No Births, Deaths of Marriages recorded in Tasmania for CREEKS or CREEK. If Thomas was born there the birth was not registered.
If you obtain a copy of his marriage certificate from New Zealand it may include his birth place and parents names. Someone may be able to tell you what details appear on NZ marriage certificated for the year 1887.
Its interesting as I checked the Tasmanian Immigration clear back to the start of the records for the boat arrivals from England Ireland etc and also from the mainland. There was absolutely no Creeks family arrived in Tasmania so I suspect they either lived under the radar or were never there to start with. I did find one interesting and totally intriguing piece of information from 1893 Dec Immigration and Passenger list for Wellington from off the boat Manapouri. a person either man or woman called "W Creeks & 2x Children". I think they embarked at Sydney Harbour before immigrating to Wellington. The real mystery is who they were in relation to the Creeks family that I know of. I am going to have a go at getting the marriage certificate. I am also pursuing information on the Permanent Artillery as we had a family rumour that Great Grand dad had been a policeman and I understand that the Permanent Artillery etc became the police force. I may have that wrong though.
Yes you're right Colin -working too late- I forgot about this marriage notice, don't know how I got Richard stuck in my mind. And Yes! I do think investing in a certificate is a very good idea. The plot has thickened since my last Reply and post. I have now received a Marriage Certificate for my Great Grandfather which Lo and Behold has the names of my Great Great Grandparents on both sides of the Family of my Great Grandfather.
To answer another question from janilye about who Thomas Albert Creeks Born 1900 died 1979. He was my Grandfather's younger brother. He was taken prisoner on Crete fighting with the local resistance during WW2 and was incarcerated in one of the German Stalags towards the end of the war.
The family story goes that the Germans were keen to offload a bunch of POW's so to be awkward they were offloading POW's with known terminal diseases.. One of the POWs incarcerated with my GrandUncle had blackwater fever but he supplied half the POW's with urine samples so they were all in the throes of being repatriated when the Second World War ended. My Uncle Tom was a character and was a fine yarn spinner at Family gatherings.
On the paternal side my Great Great Grandfather is noted as being Charles Creeks and Great Great Grandmother is noted as Eleanor Sewell on the Maternal side my Great Great Grandfather is William Henry Norris and my Great Great Grandmother is Sarah Anne Truman Collingwood. I have no dates of Births Deaths or siblings etc for these ancestors as of yet but even this has pushed my knowledge out for two extra complete generations.
