John Owens (Boy) departed from Launceston to Melbourne, on the Yarra Yarra,10th April 1853. With him was his father Henry Owens (free by servitude, arrived per Sir Charles Forbes).
John was born "in the Colonies"
Two possible Mothers of John, are Ann Morby and Mary Kelly.
I do have information on Henry Owens
Any information much appreciated. Thank you
Hi Steve.
I'm having trouble finding the arrival of your Henry and John OWENS in 1853. There was a ship named the "Yarra" but no "Yarra Yarra". The only John OWENS I can find coming to Victoria in 1853 arrived on the "Goldfinder" aged 22 years, but there was no Henry OWENS recorded.
Do you have John's age when he arrived in Victoria?
Thanks Tonkin,
All I have is from the pionneer idex, Tasmania
Henry Owens "Steerage" Dept 10th April 1853, Launceston. Bound for Melbourne. Ship to Colony, Sir Charles Forbes. Free by servitude.POL220/1/3 p137
John Owens, same as above, except born in the Colonies, Boy
No age given.
I dont know how old he is and I can find no records for John Owens.
The iron steamship 'Yarra Yarra' built about 1852 for the ASN, under master George Gilmore delivered passengers and mail from Hobart via Launceston to Melbourne and Sydney up until 1854 when the Yarra Yarra was withdrawn after a collision with her TSN rival the Clarence.
Ferry to Tasmania: A Short History By Peter Plowman
Is there anything about the marriage or children of Henry Owens 1809-1879 on his death certificate or mentioned in the inquest. It seems to me (by the newspaper report) as if Henry was living and died alone.
Looks like we share the same brick wall on this one Steve. I'm unable to locate a birth for John in Tasmania or a possible marriage for him in Victoria. It's always possible he settled in another state, but will not be easy to confirm.
Glad to see you are still with us janilye.
Thank you Janilye and tonkin,
I have not found a death reg for Henry Owens and do not have the inquest.Only the inquest from the Argus. I dont know how I missed John Owens. I realise now that I may be researching the wrong Henry Owens, that appeared on the birth cert of Edmund Henry Owens, born 25th November 1867
