Looking for European Ancestors of Lottering Family IN South Africa

My late father was Jacob(Japie)LOTTERING, born 26 September 1932 in George, South Africa as the eldest son of Edward LOTTERING and Annie Luyters. He used to tell us of his LOTTERING grandfather (married to a Xhosa woman) and who used to work as an assistant to a dentist in the Eastern Cape. My father never mentioned the racial classification of his grandfather> I always wonder when I travel past Plettenberg Bay about the name LOTTERINGSBOS which indicates that somehow a LOTTERING ancestor must have been a landowner in that area. Does the surname LOTTERING possibly have a European origin such as the LOTHARINGE region in France or the province in Holland of the same name?
