Looking for Family of Downes Horace Edwin

By PES January 29, 2011 1893 views 4 comments

I am looking for my Grandmother's brother, Horace Edwin DOWNES. Family stories have him a moving to Australia aprox. 1910 where he had a banana farm near Brisbane. Possibly another brother was in Australia as well

My Grandmother was born Lizzie Ellen DOWNES on 13 SEP 1890 in Essex, England the 4th child of Fanny (HUXTER) & Arthur Charles DOWNES. She married John RICHARDSON, 23 JUN 1917 they lived in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Canada.

I recall my Grandmother mentioning sisters Maud, Kate, & Dorothy as well as brothers Charles,Horace, Ernest, and Fred.

As a child I was shown photos of her brothers in Australia and recall seeing a wedding photo of Horace's son. My Grandmother used to receive letters from Australia, however, my family has had no contact with this branch of our family for many, many years.

My Grandmother passed away 08 OCT 1966 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba and is burried there.

hello pes - I think you have abit of research on your hands . It seems most of the downes / downs went to victoria and western australia . I think you might have to start from scratch and go to the website -> www.coraweb.com.au < its a beginners sheet into queensland ( and other parts of aussie ) of immigrants etc. The time frame may be out ? however a quicky but thorough search may unearth something . give it a a go ! Hi PES, sounds like you are looking for my great grandfather. I Think he came to Australia in about 1911. I think he died around 1955. One of his sons is my Grandfather, Cecil Rupert Downes. I just spoke to him last night, he'll be 93 this year and still lives in Queensland. I realise your post is quite old but I'd love to hear from you.
Cheers, Felicity Downes-Casipit, Sydney, Australia
