John vann was born may 20 1873 . He lived in his grandfathers home according to 1880 census from Roane county Tennessee. He is listed as 2 yr. Old grandson of Daniel and M A Vann. The oldest daughter is Mary Jane Vann who was 17 at the time. There are no older siblings, and the only conclusion, at this point,is that 2 yr. Old John was her child. John Vann later married Matilda Roberts. Their children are all listed as Vann Fritz in the family bible. There son Samuel Athens Vann Fritz was my grandfather. John an Matilda had a total of 9 children, before their early deaths in (John) 1908, and (Matilda) 1910. The older children including my grandfather Samuel were sent to the Tennessee State Children's Home, where they were farmed out. Samuel died in 1927 of tuberculosis, and exposure according to his death certificate. If you know anything about this family, I would appreciate hearing it. My mother is 87 and grew up believing she was a Fritz, when in reality she was a Vann.
J C Robert Fritts married Bettie Vann dec 12 1878 in Roane County Tennessee. Bettie birth is listed only as 1854. Hope this helps.

If you are saying Bettie Vann is John's mother and he is the grandson of Daniel Vann then she must have married into the Vann family or she is Bettie Vann daughter of Daniel.

John Fritts and Matilda Roberts were my mothers grandparents. But we don't know how John went from John Vann to John Vann Fritts. He gave all of his 9 children the surname Vann Fritts. But, we are having trouble tracing the addition of Fritts to the Vann name. I know John was the great grandson of Daniel Vann in Roane County Tennesee. Daniel had at least 4 different wives. His first wife was eleven years old when she gave birth to her first child John Vann. Her name was Sarah Ann Taylor. In the 1880 census. There is a John Vann (2 yrs.) who lives in the house of Daniel Vann who is listed as his Grandfather. I just can't find the Fritts connection.
I see the problem you have here.
If John (Vann) Fritts /(Fretz) shown in the 1880 census as Daniel Vann's grandson aged 4, married Matilda Roberts he was 16 when they married. Census states b.1876.
How do you know Bettie Vann was his mother, can you ref to a doc I can look at?
Hey, Noggin, that's the problem, I can't find the docs to tie the Vann and Fritts name together. My grandfather Samuel is listed in 1990 census in Campbell, Tennessee. His father is listed as John Fritz, but I know his real name was Vann. His mother is Matilda. That is as far as I can go. Samuel's family was split up because of the early death of his parents. All the boys and Mamie went to the Tennessee state children's home in Nashville. There were several other children not listed in this census. They were either in the orphanage or sent to other relatives. I appreciate your help, I haven't been doing this for long and don't know all the resources. I really need that elusive 1890 census! Are you in the Fritts (fritz) family?
