Looking for Information on Alexander Smith Born Aberdeensire Scotland Arrived IN Tasmania Onboard the Thomas 10 August 1833 with His Wife Mary Ann...

Arrived in Tasmania onboard the "Thomas" on 10 August 1833 with his wife Mary Simpson and sons George and Alexander. I believe they settled in Hobart, as son Alexander was apprenticed to the boatbuilder John Watson in 1845. The only death notice I can find of Alexander (Senior) was through TAMIOT. There is a headstone in the Ross Military Cemetery, Ross, with the following details:
Alexander Smith, Died 31 May 1847, aged 41 years. Native of Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
To be buried in a military cemetery, would that mean he would have had to have been a military man?
